Just got a mid 70's 20 hp merc looks clean hooked the water hose to it started after a few pulls then shut it off started again 1st pull . operated the gear shift worked fine . went ahead and bought it . put on the back of my jon boat took it to the water , it started 1st pull reversed away from ramp put it in forward idled in gear fine eased into the throttle started picking up a little speed then r's shot up and i did'nt go any faster , top speed was just off idle . then it would start slipping or cavitating it has a 2 bladed stock prop on it . any body have any ideas ?

Sounds as if you have a spun prop hub, there is a prop shop in soddy-Daisy that can fix it for you for a few bucks, I don't know the name of the place but Bbass should know. Either that or you are running a short shaft motor on a high transom boat.

Talk to the guys at Performance Propeller in Daisy. They are on Dayton Pike just north of Thrasher pike. If you are going south on Dayton Pike they are on right just past the Pilot Gas station. They will treat you right and will have the prop back to you quick. I wouldn't deal with the other guy mentioned on here.

Do you have a specific reason for your slam on Don's? I've had good results from Don's. I would not be hesitant to use performance either from friend's recommendations.

I didn't slam him, I just said I wouldn't use them and that I would use Performance Propeller. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion aren't they?

Performance are know all over the country. They are well respected on many racing websites I frequent. I have also heard good things about Dan's Prop Shop. I have never heard of Don's. I personally use performance for the fact I have always used them for years and never had any dealing with Dan. He must be doing something correct to still have his doors open. I have had people tell me they use Dan and wouldn't use performance. Everyone is entittled to their own opinion. I just go where I know the people I am dealing with. If you go to performance, tell Billy "Dunlap Boy" sent ya!

I was too harsh writing about sdfd504 "slamming" Don's - I mean Dan's.
I have been fishing - and I want to go more!
Since they are both in business both of the shops must be doing something right.
I don't like the need to go to a prop shop in the first place - since it likely means I have done something bad...

went by Don's/Dan's? this evening closed up no phone no. on building or hours of operation ? i guess i'll try perf see if i can find someone there thanks for the advice fellers .

saw the web info will start there. thanks James

Some time some simple tweaking of a prop is worth alot. When everyone has their engines maxed out and everyone is running pretty much the same power the winning difference is usually a good prop man.

Dan's hooked me up pressed the hub in thanks for all the help fellers ,motor works great !
Now ,back to fishin
