Mike got his boat back, brand new power head. Put it in , and lost reverse immediately. Got to HBSP for the mid week. Forward was a little touchy, but it worked and we headed to our first spot. Mike gets a solid hit on the first cast, but no fish. Keep fishing, and Mike gets our first keeper. In the box, out with the skunk. He is pitching toward the shore. Few minutes later he get our second, little over 15". I am casting a Zoom u-tail, alternating with a 1.5 squarebill. Toss the squarebill out parallel to the bank, a, and bam, a 4.4 eats it, comes out of the water. Near the boat , keeps dogging it, under the hull, left, right. Finally netted, About 7:30 with three in the box We have a couple more shorts, time to move. Go the the flat near Harrison bluff, and nobody would play. Decide to move, and nothing. No forward, and we already knew reverse was out. Called Tow boat, be 1/2 hour before arriving. He got there, and we had a nice slow cruise back to CFP. Trailered the boat, called the dealer, sent photo's of the linkage. The issue was a retainer not snapped tight with the power head replacement, Also a piece was missing, fell someplace on top of the motor. Reassembled, backed into the lake, had both gears.
Ran down near the dam and c-rigged deep water, boat was 15 fow. Mike catches a good spot, number 4. Action was slow, so we ran back up near Wolftever, and they are pulling water, current. Fished a flat. Mike has a nice 17+ smallmouth. I threw out parallel to the channel, and a solid hook up. Bigun. Work the fish back , and it is a 5.5, plus number five keeper, Mike and I have a couple throwbacks, and Mike gets another keeper, out with the spot. Then another , cull a 2+ largemouth. Quit at 12:30 and a slow cruise and prayer we could get back.We thought we would have a respectable bag, but if we were catching, so was the other sticks. Those guys won mid weeks and CFF with strong bags this year.
Dock talk had us hopeful, only two others had five. Ended with 18.7, and bf with 5.5. Mike and I 's first win this year.
Caught two on crankbaits, 4.4 on a KVD 1.5, and another on a DT-6. The spot was a c-rig w/ brush hog. All the rest on Senko's. Most were 5-8 fow.
With problems, we spotted the others about two hours, just glad we could make the repair and keep fishing.
