One of the flooring suppliers I deal with told me the smallmouth bite below the chick is really good this time of year.He said he just drifts down starting below the dam and throws a tube up next to the rocks and wears them out.Any truth to this that you guys know of?

I think Freebird's done this with live shiners and said the same thing as your source, ranman. I'd love to blow off work tomorrow and find out though!

I have posted a couple reports on trolling crankbaits this month. I have been averaging about 20 a trip - most of them have been small but very fun to catch. I have caught them below the Dam through Fall and even in the coldest times in Jan & Feb... trolling crankbaits, drifting shiners off the bottom, and throwing spoons in the eddies being my favorite way to catch them. I think the shiners work well in the coldest months...they barely nibble at it and you really have to be patient feeding them slack line until they take it. I caught a 5lb that way in an eddie behind one of those huge barge tie-off cylinders. I now try that spot each time I go, but have yet to nail one there this year...but I have some hand warmers and face mask ready for when it gets cold!

Oh ya, they are all over there down there. We have been wearing them out! What side of the river did he say they were getting them, riverpark side or rivermont side?

I have trolled, drifted shiners, and fished tubes down there numerous times over the last 8 to 10 years. I really believe that it does not matter as much what you throw, drift, or troll. The main factor is the weather. I have caught 50 smallies while it was sleeting in one day. I have also been out there with tubes, and shiners on a clear day and not caught anything. The worse the weather, the better the bite for me. I personally prefer a cool to cold overcast day that looks like it is going to snow a foot. You know, the days you want to lay in bed all day.

I tend to catch better fish on the west side, (HIXSON) of the river, I generally can catch some on the other side, but the quality just is not as good.

Yes, I do have witnesses on the 50+ day that are not relatives........:)

riverpark side.I gotta get down there and try that one of these days,I love catching smallmouth but you just don't see many on the hiwassee.

A guy that I work with has caught some small mouth in the 5 to 6 lb range in that area. He told me that he watched a show with Benny Hull fishing that area and he called him to ask him exactly how to do it. I called my buddy last night and he told me to start drifting around the rivermont boat ramp and drift anywhere from the the green buoys to the rivermont bank. He said he usually starts at about 30 ft off of the bank and drifts down to the mile marker light, picks up, and moves over on the next pass. He said that he only fishes a tube and tries to match the tube with the same color as the water. He said that he continues to make passes until he gets to the green buoys. He told me about some drop offs that the fish were stacked up on and a hole in the river that Benny told him was a waterfall years ago. Well I headed out this a.m. with intentions of catching some smallies. I got out there about 8:00a.m. and the fog was as thick as I had ever seen, but burned off fast. Caught a couple of smallies that were maybe 10 inches a piece on the first pass. There is a slew at the Mile marker light with a dock and a boat ramp and the water was so calm I couldn't resist throwing a popper. Caught 3 nice Largemouths on the popper. Picked up and made another pass. Hooked up with a big drum. The thing was huge. I thought I was hung at first. That was fun but I got concerned about my rod breaking at one point. Anyway, only managed to catch a couple of more Smallies the rest of the day and left at about 2:00pm. There were several more boats out there and it looked like they were only catching small ones. Some were trolling and some were bouncing plastics. I caught my last two fish on a Chartreuse and pepper centipede. You get hung up alot but you can break free if you troll up river of where you are hung and pull it loose. Only lost one hook all day. My buddy said if you aren't getting hung, you're doing it wrong.

Great info sbrannon! I need to try the stretch across from Rivermont sometime... I think I have yet to really fish the downstream section on that side. I fished that waterfall hole (or one like it) last time I went out and there was no current. I marked a bunch of fish in it and lots of cover... When there is current I normally catch a smallmouth on the downstream edge of that hole as it comes back up to 10-12 ft. depth.

They're there all year long, but my buddy says that they only catch the big ones with consistency during cool months in the spring and fall.

That sounds great, I think that from a couple of the above posts that people were not sure which side of the river you were talking about. I thought you meant the North side. Thanks for all of the info. Hopefully some day in the next couple of months I'll get down to that part of the river and test some of those smallies. I love to catch them, they are so much more powerful and have more endurance than the largemouths.
