This year instead of learning how to fish with a new lure I have desided to learn how locate and catch smallmouth. As of this moment I'm clueless on were to look for them or how to catch them. An info would help, thank Guys.

well... the best advice I can give you is ROCKS! Smallies love rocks. Especially this time of year. You can catch then on a brown hair jig with a U2 pork rind on it. Thats my favorite lure for small mouths. Find main channel points that have jutting rocks coming off of it. Sit in at least 20 Ft of water and cast across the point. You should catch some with this pattern. When the water temp and air temp get warmer... I would throw a bubble gum worm, wacky style. This is another good way to catch them. Come to Watts Bar sometime and I'll try to put you on some. Shoot me an e-mail sometime and maybe we can plan a trip!

This might help. Which ever lake your fishing learn everything you can about the crawdads in it. Crawdads spawn on the full moon and love red clay. In most lakes you can find the red mud. In the winter and summer I love to fish it. You find the craws you find the sm. Right now they will be moving on gravel, broke up shell, or any hard bottom where it's easy for them to fan. Some lakes like Tims has a lot of pea gravel. I personally love to find the smaller areas where you have some transition an example would be big chunk rock with a patch of gravel mixed in. Sm love to spawn by something be it a stump, log, big rock etc. For the most part in our area they will be coming off the bed after the next full moon and for about two weeks after the spawn they in a pretty good feeding mood. There is alot of ways to catch sm you just need to fish what you have confidence in. I personally love the small baits such as jigs and grubs. But I will throw top water after they come off the bed ( SPOOK) and at night in the summertime I will roll a sb some. Let me warn you it is very addictive for it has cost me one wife, a bunch of money, ruined my lm fishing, makes me lay out of work, but I am seeking help. One good thing though, it has probably saved a Turkeys life or two.

Beside smaller sized black/blue or green pumpkin jigs, my best smallie lures are Berkeley Frenzy (white) and small Luhr Jensen hotlips (1/4 oz). The Luhr Jensen dive so fast and have a huge amount of action. I believe in fishing the transitions; clay/fist sized rock, fist size to boulders, rock/cliffs to fist size.

From what I have experienced in the last year of trying to catch sm, these guys are correct. But one thing I didnt see was that the SM love moving water, they tend to be more aggressive around dams where the water flow is increased. Usually small baits seem to work better, but the time of year makes a difference with all species. At night when it warms up, try a Sb w/ a colorado blade (SM love bright colors as well) I use pink or black. Bright crank baits will produce as well, most of the time. If you cant get on them with artificial bait, try some live bait. Jigs and tubes work good too. Good luck!
