Hey folks...anyone know of any tips for catching trout in the Great Smoky Mtns National Park. I'm taking the family camping next week at Elkmont Campground in the park and will be fishing the Little River that runs through the campground. Since I'm not to good with a fly rod, we normally use ultralight spinning rigs with artificial bait only. Regulations require that you can only use a single hook lure and they make a rooster tail with a single hook but we have never been able to catch any decent trout up there with the rooster tails. We've tried small 4 inch plastic worms as well but never much luck on those either. I know guys catch trout up there but we cant get anyone to give up their secrets. Anybody have any ideas or tips? Nothing like dining on fresh trout by campfire and the mountain stream running right by your campsite.....but we gotta catch them first!

Hey Greg,

my family vacations every year in Townsend (my boss/family friend has an unbelievable vacation home right on the water next to the swinging bridge) and my bro-in law and I canoe the Little River section that runs through Townsend a couple of times whenever we're up there. I know you said roostertails haven't worked for you, so I don't know how you'll take this, but we throw 1/16th pumpkinseed rooster tails and do pretty well with them. We catch Redeye and bluegill as well, but there's probably 6 trout a day that we catch as well. Also this Rebel lure called a crickhopper works well anywhere, up there especially. Good luck.

Hey Ja...thanks alot! Thats great info and I'm gonna check it out for sure. Its beautiful country up there and it sure is a different challenge trying to catch those trout. Thanks again!

Wish I coulb be of some help, but my fly-fishing has produced nothing but small, I mean small...fish, not even trout!

I just dont hold my mouth right I guess! Come to think of it, whatever it is that I caught would be great catfish bait....

Trout Magnets is another single hook option.

While wading be sure to approach as silently as possible, make no wakes on the water. Also be aware of your shadow on the water. Think stealth, ninja like movements.
