I need someone to look at this pic and see if you think this is a juvenile rattler. I hate to kill good snakes but this one didn't have rattles but shook its tail and coiled up and struck at my rake.

Rat or pine snake . Harmless . Most snakes will shake their tales when they feel they are in danger . Just a self defense tactic . Good snake to have around .

Thanks just wanted to make sure. I hate to kill and then ask myself about it later. I hate mice more than snakes any day.this ones head and pattern threw me off. Juvenile ones are hard sometimes for me to distinguish.

The three snakes in this area you should use caution with will all have blunt tails. A baby Rattler will have a small Button tip. A Copper-head as well as a Cotton-mouth will have a very hard taper at the tail. The long skinny tail on your snake is enough to know it is a harmless snake.. Those snakes will bite you if you create such a situation where you are harassing the snake to where it feels the need to defend itself. They have teeth that may break the skin but No Fangs and No Venom to worry about. You can consider yourself fortunate that you have that snake eliminating all those rats around your property.

Gray rat snake. Makes a nice pet. Calms down as you hold him. Climbs trees and gets five feet long around here. Great snake to keep mice and rats population down.

We have a couple in our area-they can be intimidating when they're startled, but can be safely handled.
I'd rather have them around than cats!
