I had to take my wife to the dentist this afternoon and I got to reading a field and stream magazine and there was an article about the soft baits, worms, sinkos, etc. The article said that there are quite a few fish dieing because they are eating the discarded plastic baits that people use or they throw them away, they will not digest and it kills the fish. There was a private pay lake mentioned that said they had stopped people from using the soft baits because of this. I guess everyone throws the baits away when they get bad and I know you can't do anything about the ones you lose when fishing but I guess we can all help by not throwing the used baits in the water. The bait company's are trying to develop digestable soft baits now sorta like gummy bears and such but they won't keep especially in a hot tackle box.

thanks for the heads up....that is some interesting reading!

I take the leftover worm bodies and make put them on my hairjigs, I don't throw away nuthin:)

I put all my old plastics in a baggie, expose them to sunlight a few days to let the colors bleed, then try the rainbow colors out when the fish won't bite nothing else. The yellow/green/pumpkin/chartruese blend actually catches fish.......emoBigsmile

Good info Doc1.

Isn't Gulp digestible? I thought this was one of the reasons why they came out with that product too.... Always save my used up plastics to throw away later. Never liter in a body of water.

i have caught and filleted bass in the past and cut open their stomachs to see what they are eating. I have on several occassions seen grubs in the bellys of 3 lbers. They were healthy fish and the grubs were being broken down. I have also seen fish with plastic worms sticking out of their A$$. I am sure some die but i know for a fact that they can live with plastics in their body also.

I usually just leave my torn plastics in Beeltespin's boat. i think he does something with them.

Yea, I read the same article and have stopped throwing old plastic in the water. It said some plastic could last up to 200 years. Everyone needs a bag to keep them in.

Japan outlawed non-biodegradable soft plastics years ago due to this issue. Gulp is bio-degradable and if you look at the package you will see Japanese writing as they sell Gulp over there.

I think it would be a good idea to make these soft baits digestable. And what the heck, I would also put some nutrients and vitamins in the baits
to make the fish grow biggeremoTongue
