Just returned from SD hunting pheasants. I will post some pictures shortly. There were 10 of us from around the southeast that met in Canova SD for our annual trek. SD reported a banner hatch this year and they are right. We had a 1st day limit after just four hours of hunting. For those of you that have been before you will appreciate this; our last drive on day 1 was a 1/2 mile drive through Sudex (cane like growth). We netted 24 pheasants on that drive and capped our limit.
The next few days were tougher due to changing weather. We still managed 25+ birds a day, just had to work harder.
The best part of the trip was taking my son on his first pheasant hunt. He was uneasy because I had warned him about how tough the hunting could be. When he came out of the middle of the Sudex, he could not get the grin off his face. He had feathers sticking out of all sides of his hunting vest. When I asked him how many he got, he nearly shouted two at the top of his lungs. I think there was a little excitment.
For me, seeing his smile made the trip worth while. I made him wait till he turned 18 to take him on this trip. Hearing him talk about the hunt for the entire drive home kind of clued me in to the fact it was worth the wait for him.
