Hey I just got an interest in spearfishing and was wondering if any of you know some good lakes or rivers that have carp or gar?

Are you talking about scuba diving spearfishing... or spearing from above water?

If it's the latter, Chickamauga Lake is full or carp & gar. However water clarity (or lack thereof) is not conducive to scuba spearfishing.

The upper reaches or Hiwassee River and/or Ocoee are very clear, and have a pretty good population of suckers, and probably some carp. The Ocoee often has a strong Spring run of buffalo running upstream like salmon. But it is very short-lived... usually just a matter of 4 or 5 days at best. And it is difficult to guess when it will happen.

Either place, be careful you don't spear any gamefish (i.e. trout, bass, etc.). The game wardens don't take kindly to that... and the trout fishermen would likely lynch you. ;)

So far the only fish I plan on spearing are carp, catfish, and maybe gar even though gar are hard to clean. What other fish can I spear that's not game fish. Thanks for the info.
I am planning on scuba spear fishing.

I started spearfishing on tanks about 7 years ago. From my experience, spearing locally is pointless...viz is so bad that fish have to be closer to you than the muzzle of your gun (depending on the gun you shoot, I shoot a 54" Ocean Rhino) just to see/ID them.

Save your pennies and go to the Gulf Coast a few times each summer. Water is much clearer (most of the time), MUCH warmer, and you can eat GREAT off your kill. Have to watch the seasons calendar pretty close though...politicians seem to think that nearly every fish in the Gulf is overfished and open seasons are short/non-existent for good/target species (E.G. - Red Snapper and Triggerfish).

What is your cert level?

I plan on free dive with no tanks, I really want to go to the beach and do it when we go on vacation
