My friend Dan comes to Talladega twice a year for the race, he always brings new folks with him when he comes and they ask to go catfishing.
Results have been mixed in previous years, but this trip was a doozy.
I got to the dam Friday evening to scout around, hoping to find some good biat and possibly chase a striper. They had five spill gates open and bait was nowhere to be found. It was really spooky to see that even the locals were not fishing off the railing, I should have know something was up.
We tried Saturday morning for anything in the discharge using soons, fluke, sassy shad, etc. No luck.
Then tried the wingwall for some catfish action, no luck.
I saw a few skipjack bust below the ramp, and we boated 4 of them and several small white bass there.
Moved down river hitting know places I have caught catfish before, no luck.
The trip ended with not a cat in the boat, and my pride hurt. So it goes with the life of Spur.
