Took my son squirrel hunting for the first time yesterday and he loved it and has already told me he wants to go again next weekend. We spent about 3 1/2hrs in the woods walking and talking. He was full of questions about hunting and the outdoors in general. It was a great bonding time for me and him, and now it a memory that we both will have.

I still remember my first squirrel hunt with my dad about 16 or 17 years ago. I still remember the .410 and actually pulled it out the other day and just reminisced the good ole days...

This was in my Griffin Daily News column a week ago yesterday - glad you followed my advice! ;) - seriously - I wish every parent would.

Squirrel season opened yesterday. It seems way too hot to be hunting but this is a great time to get out in the woods with your kids. Be sure to wear bug spray and go early in the morning or late in the day when you will be cooler and the tree rats are more likely to be active. They don’t seem to want to move around much in the heat of the day, either.
Hunting squirrels is a good way to teach gun safety and the skills necessary to get close to game. Before deer season opens the woods are pretty empty and you can even scout deer hunting areas while stalking squirrels. Give it try.
