I just started having an issue when starting my motor. When you turn the key, nothing, if you continue off/on, you can hear a slight "click" for lack of a better term, back on the motor. Sometimes it fires first turn, sometimes it takes 2or 3 turns, sometimes 15 turns to get it to do anything. Any ideas?

Nope, 750 cranking battery, and topped it off before hitting the water last night as well. I am guessing the starter, but its new, so dont know why it would be acting up??? :( :(

Spur more then likely its the starter solenoid. Take an ohm meter and check at the little post for voltage when some one is turning the key. If no voltage found then its the switch at fault if voltage found and starter not engaging then solenoid at fault. You can try to manuely start it at the solenoid.

SPur not sure, but the click sound can come from several things, either the relay. soleniod, or the choke. Does the starter have a hard times getting moving before it really starts turning over the engine? Mine was doing this and had to replace the brushes in my starter.

Well, it aint the key-switch. I don't think its the solenoid either, as you can jump it over at will. What does the relay do, and is it between the key and the solenoid?

Spur, it is the brushes in the starter, they are worn out, rebuild it for around 25 bucks and you will be as good as new. Take it to Ray's auto Elec. on #11 hwy in tiftonia. His number is 423-821-3202, call before going over.

Have you checked the ground on the starter? If so check and make sure its not grounding out before it gets to starter. Just make sure ground coming from battery hasn't got a bad spot in it where it can ark. Juast a thought tho

i would say the solenoid is bad, my brothers johnson was doing the same thing and a new solenoid fixed it. if yours is like his, he used a ford solenoid from autozone for 10 bucks, the boat place wanted 40 bucks

Eric just because you can jump that solenoid over doesn't mean its good. Take an ohm meter and measure the current at the small post while turning the switch. If it drops below 9 volts it won't excite the wiring in the solenoid to make it start the starter. It has to have 12 volts are more to turn the starter and it has to come thru the solenoid.

New solenoid just went on and it cranked like a dream 7 times in a row. I wonder what is was... emoScratch emoLaugh
Thanks to Bassnbug for the tip about a Ford part working. Got a lead from WLG on which model ford to ask for, and hit it on the head! CFF is the best guys, thanks a bunch. emoThanks
