Never thought much about bass before MadBomber sent me to school. Since reading the posts on CFF this year I realized that this past spring (3-20-07) 2 state record sized spotted bass were stunned (shocked) up by the TVA survey boat. The present state record angling record is 5lbs. 8oz. The record fish was caught way back in 1989. Too bad these 2 fish that were stunned (shocked) within 100 yards of each other instead of being caught on rod and reel. Someone should be changing the record book pretty soon. Both of these fish (and all the rest stunned up) were released to be caught another day. I'll attempt my first picture holding one fish that weighed 6lbs. 15oz. Weighin was at the Woltever Bridge ramp. Both fish were picked up in Wolftever Creek.

That is me. Quite an interesting trip all in all. It would truely amaze you at the amount of fish stunned (shocked) to the surface. By the way I did learn about one section that is loaded with shellcracker in wolftever. Haven't had a chance to fish it yet this year. Perhaps in the spring.

Kingfish, I would expect that that fish had a tooth patch on it's tounge didn't it? From the markings and the size I would bet that it was a hybrid, LM and spot. Just like the record spot that was disqualified last year that BFG had, I would bet that the genetic testing would disqualify it as a record. That won't keep me from trying to catch that fish but I would expect that it's a hybrid. If I catch one of those two fish I'll have them tested. Thanks for the pic. Was Biofisher with you when those fish were shocked up? He said that he was amazed at the fish that were ahocked up in Wolftever.

I agree, that is definetly not a full bred spotted bass IN MY OPINION. Good Post.

Micropterus salmoides all the way. Largemouth Mama and Daddy. No way mouth is too big , check out the gap between the dorsal fins. Spots do not have any gap between them .The fins are also erect as to see all the spines. If I were a fisheries biologist I'd be embarassed to say that the fish was supposed to be a spot (M. punctalatus). If it was a record, I would have at least taken a scale sample .PROOF . No record spot in Wolftever. Any one care to agree or disagree with my opinion?

Yes Biofisher was there. Yes the fish had a spot on its tongue. Guess we'll never know for sure if it was a hybrid. Still was alot of fun seeing all the fish in such a short distance.

I was there along with my son this past spring. That was a really nice bass but I don't know if it would pass all the test to qualify for the spot record.

I too think it favors a hybrid. I know that in order to certify a fish as a state record TWRA will take tissue samples and the fish would have to be tested to be 100% spotted bass before they would certify it. I think it was one of our Nickajack guides that had a monster spot below Nick dam this past winter they thought was a record, but after the test it cam back as a LM/spot hybrid.

Either way I would love to catch that fish thanks for sharring the story and the pic!

It's hard to tell from a pic but that fish really looks phenotypically more like a LM than it does a spot. The tongue patch being there makes me think that it was a hybrid but your assessment is right as far as I can tell.

It was BFG, that's BigFishGuide, here on the forum that had the record phenotypic spotted bass last year. It really had the characteristics of a spotted bass but it failed the genetic test. I would expect that the state record spotted bass as it stands now was probably a hybrid also but we will never know because they didn't check the genetics only the discernable external characteristics back then. We had a pretty good discussion about that in a thread back about a year ago. It looks like that thread is old enough that it has been purged. I just did a search for the thread and came up empty. It was a really good discussion. What do you do for a living micropterus?
