Any ideas on this. My steering is quite stiff, can hardly turn it. It has a greese fitting which I shot with regular auto type greese. Would there possibly be a special kind for boat steering??? Thanks

I had the same issue on my bullet I just replace the whole steering from the helm, beziel and cable. It steers like new now. I tried different types of Greece but to no avail. It was just as cheep to buy the whole kit I paid under 140.00 for the kit from a local dealer. Good luck if need help let me know.

Thanks for the info Jgreco. I guess I need to know next where to find steering for 1985 Merc 150. If you or anyone knows the best place, let me know. Thanks

Gator, the stering cables will get wet inside the housing after a few years, this will cause rust and this is where the binding comes from. You will have to remove the motor to install the new cable, if you don't have a lift, you might want to take the boat to a boat shop to have this done. The length of the cables are hard to determine on a boat because you can't get to most of them to find out the length.

Orrrrr, you could go to the boat show this weekend and see what bargains they have that already have new steering cables on them.

Gator, I have an 1985 mercury also .I went to boats for less there in Rossvile on Schmitt rd. The owner there was very helpful and he is very honest. It took me about an hour to replace everything on my boat. I went with the steel flex rotary system. The number of feet that you will need is printed on your old cable at least mine was.Good luck

Yeah but Murdock, if he goes to the boat show & buys a new boat @  $?0,000.00. He'll have to work all the time to pay for it & won't ever get to use it.

Not Gator, He told me he hasn't bought a new boat in over 20 years and I am sure he has been saving all his money just for such an occasion.

The new boat idea did occur to me but it'll be so hard to aford the boat and the alimoney both. Thanks for the ideas guys.

I am sorry, I didn't think about that. Sometimes a new boat just isn't worth it, but then again you would have plenty of time on your hands to fish.

Gator, holler at BBass. He has a complete system, he use to anyway. You will need to get a # off one of the old cables, or take one off to measure. Sometimes you can do the job without taking the motor off, but not always.
