what is the best way to stop a deer when he is in a fast trot or slow run I tried to stop one this am with no luck he just kept on going did not speed up or slow down I grunted fawn bleat and yelled no luck hope to see him again in the am in the snow if he stops it will be over or if I see him sooner he came within 30yards of my tree but did not see me

As a total newbie who hasn't even attempted deer hunting, my guess would be installing a good traffic light system. Teach the deer to stop on red (feed them for reinforcement). Once they get accustomed to obeying this, you should be in business.

Could be he was deaf. Did you try using sign language?

(snowing here too, and I'm obviously as bored as takenoprisoners. Can't wait for other responses..............)

I have always whistled at deer and most times the stop on a dime to check it out. If you have just severely spooked a deer, good luck, but I do this after I shoot when there is a group, I get a second chance about 75% of the time to shoot another one.

Sometimes a rutting buck is impossible stop if he is on the trail of a doe. This season, I had a real nice 9 point that I watched chase a doe off the mountain across from me alll the way up my mountain and past my stand. I had the cross hairs on him the whole time and made every sound I could from "baaahh" to a loud yell. He never so much as slowed down. He was the biggest deer I saw with my own eyes this year.

I think the next time I see him I will just send about 10 rounds in his direction as fast as my ar15 will send them if I had a bigger gun this am I would have just shot him any way but I want to kill one with the ar15 and only have 3 days left to do it will try again in the am seen another one this afternoon but he was 400 yards in high wind he on his way to me but it got dark before he made it hope one of them is their in the am did not see any does just the lonely old bucks oh and 3 mules

I have had several times done this if in the line of site make a sharp movement. This has worked twice for me. It startles them and they freeze for a secound

I tried the whistle and the doe that was 17 steps from my stand stopped on a dime then turned around and ran like hell for the border and then I seen a big body deer also leave for the border don't know if it was a buck or not I think I will move my stand for this afternoon if I get warm before I go back if not I will just set in the truck and watch across the field it want be as cold that way it was brutal this am I think it said 4 when I left the house and the 7 mile ride was not much better the truck had just started to get warm when I got their don't think I can take another day of being in that kind of cold

If the whistle don't work holler at em I usually try to bleat loud with my mouth. When there in a trot they usually stop if there in a dead out run good luck.

went back this afternoon did not see any thing just the same old mules I may have to shoot them before the season is over maybe next year they want be in that pasture

This post reminds me of the first great buck my son shot 3 yrs ago when he was 14 yr old, his first big buck, a heavy 9 point that he was hunting for 2 years. It was during the rut and the buck came running down an old logging road 40 yds behind a hot doe. When he was telling me all about "the moment" after we both calmed down, he said "I saw it coming towards me on a run, and I tried to say "MAAHHH!!" real loud, but all that came out was "muuhhh"...it got caught in my throat". He took the running shot and the buck piled up in a dead fall 20 yds away.

if you cant stop him just lead him a little! practice makes perfect. really though just bleak harder.
