Hey guys I went to Publix a few minutes ago to get some stuff to go with my trout dinner tonight, and while I was there I stopped by the fish section as I always do to see what they had in fresh.

I swear, they had small striped bass filets for $19.99 @ lb!! $19.99 a lb!! I couldn't believe it. With the skin on and none of the red cut out. The mahimahi was only 11.99 and the @#$% halibut was still 4 dollars cheaper a lb. I have seen a lot of crazy stuff in my day, but them prices was out of this world! I must have 30 lbs of filets in my freezer from last year. At those prices I got $600 worth of striper meat.

Them SOB's are crazy!!

Twenty Bucks a pound for any kind of fish is rediculous. Even for GOLDFISH. Yeah by that, I just gave my ex-wife and her new hubby about sixty dollars worth of Striper yesterday.

What kind of poison did you put in it?

I'm not the sharpest tack in the box (don't need to hear from you, Fat Albert), but isn't it against the law to sell game fish? Isn't stripers considered gamefish? If the stripers came from the ocean, they might be legal, I just don't know.

The stripers probably came from the Chesapeake Bay. Although they are game fish they are fished for commercially in the saltwater as well. Commercial fisherman depleted the resource for many years up there so commercial fishing was halted. Recently the stripers have made a comeback but the harvesting is closely and highly regulated. That is probably why the price is so high.
Anybody paying $20 per pond for half cleaned stripers has got more money than sense. JMHO

Where is there a Publix? I moved up from FL and never seen a Publix around here.
I never had bass of any kind. What are some good ways to cook striper?

Yeah .. I knew Publix announced it was coming to Choo Choo City but I hadn't heard about any of them opening yet. WHERE? I love that store. I too lived in Florida for awhile and boy their sub sandwiches are hard to beat.

I believe these ones was commercial raised. I don't care though, you got to be plum crazy as a @#$% house rat, to pay $20 a lb for any kind of fish.

I been all over the SE U.S., and I ain't never even heard tell of fish going for $20 a lb. Much less a striped bass filet right here in middle TN, where you can get all you want from most rivers and lakes around here!

Somebody wanted to know how to cook striper. To me, I love to eat 'em, but I let 95% swim free. I only kept 4 last year and probably caught 200.

You can grill 'em, which is a great way to eat 'em. Or steak 'em up and fry 'em. You can cook 'em most any way and they're great. You just have to make sure and cut all the red out, which is gamey tasting. Leave that in, and they're "river tastin'", kind of like an ol' muddy catfish that comes out of the river.

Funny story though, I was fishing the Wateree a few years back, in SC, and the river was up. When the Wateree's up, its real muddy like chocolate milk. You can hardly see your hand underneath the surface. Anyway, we come back from the rock lines upriver and I guess we had about five stripers in the cooler that would go about 10 to 15 lbs each. (limits there are 5 per person)

When we got back to the ramp to take out, this old black guy was down at the waters edge kneeling down. As we got closer, I saw that he was filling up gallon zip loc bags with that nasty muddy river water. Curiosity got the better of me and I hollered " Hey man, what you doin' with that river water?" He hollers back, "Man, I's gonna put my rockbass meat in it after I get done cleanin' ems." I said, "Why you gone do that?" He says, "Shoot man, I freezes 'em like dat" "Dat way, they take just like da riva when I takes 'em out and cooks 'em!" I chuckled, "Man you crazy!" and we both laughed our @#$ off.

I'll never forget that ol' dude. Me and my buddy Brandon laughed everytime we saw each other for a month about that fella. I ain't never heard tell of anything like that before I saw that guy doin' it. What about y'all?

There's an old man that is a neighbor of mine that is unable to fish and I keep he and his wife in fresh fish pretty often. Usually it's crappie or bluegill fillets but one time I brought him some striper fillets that were cleaned without the red streak. He told me later that the fish didn't taste right without the red and if I brought him some more to leave the red on because he liked the strong taste.
Fine with me as the stripers are easier to fillet.

Sal the way I do it is to start at the head and fillet just as you would any other kind of fish. Then turn skin side down just like any other but instead of holding the knife against the skin to get the most off just raise the blade about 1/4 to 3/8 inch and leave the red on the skin. Then there will be a little streak right down the middle. Then split the fillet right down the center of that line and slice the rest of the small strip red stuff off. I'm sure there are other ways to do it but this way is how I do stripers, cats and white bass. All three are excellant when the red is gone.

Very similar to what i do Cheez. Fillet then cut the skin off at the skin. Then I cut the fillet along the latteral line. On each piece have the cut edge facing you so you can see the the line that seperates the red from the white meat. On a cutting board, I leave the point of my fillet on the board and raise the back of the knife nearest to me and guide it along the line to take off the red. That way you can control the depth of your cut and getall of the red and only the red meat.

Thanks guys. I never ate a freshwater fish before. Not even catfish.

Sal329, if you like fish, you are in for many very pleasant meals. Crappie, Blue Cat, Striper, Spotted Bass, Bluegill, Sauger, Rainbow Trout and so much more. You need to start with some deep fried Crappie fillets. Yummy

I need to get out and fish already. One thing I miss about FL I could walk to the lake an pull out adozen sunnies, a few talapia, wild oscars and a few 5+lbs LM.
