A much awaited trip finally took place yesterday. Dad has been out here for my brothers surgery, and since my bro was feeling better, we were finally able to take a day going fishing!
The day started out quite chilly and a bit foggy, but it wound up getting quite nice after the north wind let up.
We started out drifting for smallies, but no sucess. A few unknown species hit our dead shiners, but came unbottoned. The skips were running at chick dam for the first time in a long time, and we grabbed some "Biggun" bait
Dads first cast with a foley spoon was a memory...everyone claims they catch fish, but Im convinced they do even better!! On his first cast it sails right on a collision course with a Blue Heron and hits it and snags right on. I turn to see his braided flying off his spool at mach 10.0 and ends by unspooling and watching the heron fly off with a foley on its back and several hundered yards of line trailing emoUpsmile
We go on a cat hunt and boat abourt 7 small blues, 3 channels amd one nice 32# out of first hole, setting his new biggest fish and PB Blue.
We grab lunch and hit the next dam in search of skipjack action and wow was it there! quickly filled the cooler up with them!! Loaded with bait we hit another hole, and Dad tangles with a nice flathead! After a period of no bites a nice chuncky blue comes along.
We then setup on a night spot, and after a paitent wait, action begins. First a rod slaps the water REALLY hard and stops. I reel in to find the hook back in the bait emoDoh
Next a thump hits another rod. I reel in to feel a snag, but also a fish somewhere in the mix. Little by little I start undoing the snag, when a suden burst of power comes from the hook end. Line peels out quickly but then the line snaps in structure. AHHH!
Third time is a charm, and dad picks up a moving rod and pulls to feel a barn door pull back! "Its a monster!" he says after feeling a power run last about 10 seconds. After a very intense battle in shallow water we boat a lovely 42# flathead that set his new biggest fish!
Great way to end a great day!
