Found this article very entertaining.

Editor's Note: Stephen Prothero, a Boston University religion scholar and author of "God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions that Run the World," is a regular CNN Belief Blog contributor.

By Stephen Prothero, Special to CNN

In 1966, John Lennon famously claimed that The Beatles were "more popular than Jesus." Today that title may belong to Tim Tebow, the Denver Broncos quarterback more famous for praising Jesus than for throwing touchdowns.

As anyone who has visited Dallas or Atlanta on any recent weekend can attest, America’s two great religions are Christianity and football. In recent weeks, these two great faiths have come together in Tim Tebow, the new starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos and America’s latest merger of faith in Jesus and faith in the Almighty Touchdown.

When viewed from the perspective of “the world,” Tebow is, at best, a mediocre NFL quarterback. When viewed through the eyes of faith, however, he is something like the Second Coming of Joe Montana. And maybe Something More.

On this burning question of Tim Tebow, I must confess to being an agnostic. But I understand the fervor on both sides.

Skeptics generally concede that Tebow, an outspoken Christian, was an extraordinary high school and college football player. After all, he won the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore, and led his University of Florida team to two NCAA football titles.

But those who refuse to bow down before Tebow insist that NFL football is another game altogether, and when it comes to that game Tebow is a passing fancy. They attribute Denver’s near miraculous 5-1 run during his reign as a starter not to his offense but to the Broncos defense.

They point out that he throws about as well as Peppermint Patty, and that in one of his wins he completed only two passes more than Charlie Brown (which is to say two). His completion percentage (45.5%) is last in the league.

Skeptics are also turned off by Tebow’s public displays of religion. Tebow used to cite Bible verses on his eye black. And his tendency to be found praying while his teammates are strutting has added a new word—“Tebowing”—to the lexicon.

True believers say to hell with all that. What matters are the intangibles. Tebow is a winner. He may allow his team to fall behind, but in the end he leads the Broncos to victory, often in a fashion that can only be termed miraculous.

Which is to say, when it comes to the Almighty TT, you gotta have faith (or not).

In his book “Faith and Belief,” the Religious Studies scholar Wilfred Cantwell Smith describes how the notion of “faith” changed over the centuries from something like “trust” to its modern-day meaning of “belief in the unbelievable.”

And that, it seems to me, is what we are witnessing with Tebow.

It is simply not believable that a quarterback who cannot throw would turn a team from a 1-4 also-ran to a 6-5 playoff contender. But Tebow has done that, in part by running and in part, well, by faith.

There is, to be sure, Tebow's faith in Jesus. But perhaps more importantly, there is the faith of his teammates in him. Not to mention the adoration of legions of University of Florida alums, and of fans in Denver and beyond.

As a scholar of religion, I have little expertise in football, NFL or otherwise. But I cannot help weighing in on a few comparisons between TT and JC:

Jesus: turned a ragtag band of 12 apostles into the number one religion in the world

Tebow: turned a ragtag squad of 11 football players into an NFL juggernaut

Jesus: prayed a lot (to God)

Tebow: prays a lot (to Jesus)

Jesus: ran the money changers out of the temple

Tebow: runs the spread option

Jesus: miraculously saved a wedding at Cana by turning water into wine

Tebow: miraculously led the Broncos to last-second victories against the Dolphins, the Jets and the Chargers.

Coincidence? You be the judge. As for me, I'm sitting back and waiting for Tebow to do something truly miraculous. Like winning a game without completing a single pass, or running back a punt for a touchdown, or kicking a 50-yard field goal to win a game.

Meanwhile, I am happy to report that Jesus is still more famous than Tebow. At least for now.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Stephen Prothero.

Tebow is the reason for the broncos season Jesus is the resaon for the the CHRISTMAS season Tim is greAT for football and faith

This is all media hype. Tebow is a good football player period. He has good genetics and is a sizable athelete. Faith doesn't cause you to be a good athelete or win ballgames. With that rational we would have to say that O.J. Simpson was faithful because he was a good athelete. Does any one really think God is concerned with the outcome of a football game? I mean come on something like 300,000 people died in a Tsunami a few years ago. Don't you think maybe God has a little more on his plate than a football game. Im not trying to take anything away from Tebow. His character is to be commended. But comparing him to a Messiah? How do they say it? Come On Man.

It amazes me how the "experts" rate certain players coming out of college. There is to much emphasis put on the combine... The experts have for most part been wrong about quarterbacks. Take a look at Jamarcus Russell, had a sub-par career at LSU, and comes out and throws the ball 80 yards in the combine and becomes the number 1 pick... Who cares!

Tebow is a proven winner and has been successful at every level and when he does the same thing in the NFL, the experts are shocked. Tebow has become a leader within his football team and his team believes in him, which in turn makes them elevate their game. I love how the media is taking angles like this and how its really the defense that has spurred this winning streak. Pretty sure its the same defense that started the season 1-5.

No the kid isn't going to have flashy numbers or win the MVP, but I guarantee you everyone on his team would consider him the MVP of the Broncos.

God could care less about football, but an athlete can achieve great things by playing for God and what God represents. As a football coach, and yes we are public, we talk about this all the time. Football can be more than a game, it is also a place where young men can learn lessons about life, because life is going to come at them harder than football ever will. The heat, the cold, the running, winter workouts, meetings, playing hurt, sharing gain and loss, keeping you composure under adversity, and thats just a small part of it. We preach that playing for and believing in God you can find the stength to overcome whatever is thrown at you. Tell kids all the time that believe it or not one day they will have their own family, a job with a boss, co-workers and etc. That God does have a plan for them, and if they believe in God and live through him they can find the courage and strength to get though whatever. As far as Tebow goes what he has is not just natural, he has worked hard all his life to be able to do what he does. He has took what God has given him and made the most of it.

The word is "FAITH". If you have the faith God will and can do great things....and little things through you. I am not saying that God will grant a win for him any more then someone on the other team praying for a win. However you pray to do your best, do what is best for the glorification of our Lord. I am not saying that Tebow is some saint or touched by an angle. emoRolleyes But I do hope and pray with him that he will keep putting the message out there. Too often Christian do not speak up for their belief. It gives me great admiration for Tebow because he does what a lot of us should. Myself included. emoDoh I am really glad to see him winning. I hope he and the rest of the Broncos continue to do so. emoAngel Jmax

I'm a Tebow fan! I am glad he's not a Gator anymore and still running over everyone in the SEC! He is a great example of what sports and a role model is supposed to be while standing up for what he believes. To bad there isn't more like him out there for our children to see. To bad he doesn't get a little bit of good publicity about the good things he does in the name of his religion and beliefs. Our sports role model of today are all about being tattooed and bling blinged! They can't speak English or make a coherent sentence. Most are drug using, baby making, party animal idiots that were handed a free pass through school because "I am a sports Superstar!" {Has anyone seen an interview with the "Honey Badger"?} Then they sign a multi million dollar contract and are to stupid to know what to do with the money and wind up busted and broke leaving behind a multitude of kids that want to be just like them! Oh. and I forgot about the ex wives and girl friends with all of the offspring trailing behind probably for the tax payers to support. Yea, I'm a Tebow fan!

It is funny how a few of those guys can create a generalization about the entire NFL. Yea you have those, and yea the media exploits those stories because that is what most want to hear. That is the perception, but the reality is 95% of the guys in the NFL are very, very involved in their communities, extremely charitable, and hold their faith close. Unfortunatly in our society, that does not sell. It just seems like fear and distrust is the Gold standerd these days.

Maverick, I agree with you in part. Bad, negative news always dominates. As you said,"that's what most people want to here", that's what sells. But with the immediacy of electronic media today and all the negative information making the news, then as you said, the lack of positive information coming, who are those kids going to look up to and remember? Also I wasn't just speaking about the NFL. It's in all sports. Now with a parting question, how many other good, positive sports role models out there can you name that are top of the mind and in the news doing something beneficial? I can probably list and out number you with just tomorrows newspaper with the negative ones. I think today it was dominated by Ndamukong Suh. So again, who do you think the kids are going to remember and who do they want to emulate? To them, perception is reality.
