I'm a new user to the Forum, but have been reading the posts here for the last month or so. Very informative group of folks. I thought that I would pass on to the Forum members that the proposed ban on the commercial sale of catfish from east Tennessee reservoirs is having an effect on us here in north Alabama. I was leaving the Madison County Boat Harbor ramp at Huntsville this past Tuesday evening and spoke to a "migrant" commercial fisherman. Seems that he is moving to north Alabama from Watts Bar because of the proposed commercial fishing ban. Actually, the fisherman was not originally from Tennessee, he had migrated there from Florida. We have been extremely fortunate around here to see little or no commercial fishing on the upper end of Wheeler Reservoir in the past few years; looks like that is going to change.

This commercial fisherman told me that he sold his fish to a market live and that they were transported from the local market to Atlanta Ga. Any idea who ultimately uses these river fish? Hopefully our fish aren't destined for a cat food factory!

Good post for your first one Canoemac. Welcome to the board. I wasn't aware of the commercial fishing ban here in Tennessee.. I hope the resulting migration doesn't hurt one of my favorite lakes

Canoemac,

Welcome to the forum! I am from north Alabama, and Wheeler is my beloved home lake. I understand the commercial fishermen have to make a living too, but this is even more of a good reason to enact the 36" legal limit law in Alabama. Did you happen to get the man's name?

Send me a PM and maybe we can discuss in more detail. Also hit up Minner, Southerncats, and engatty... we are all Wheeler catfishers.

Welcome to the board Canoemac. If a law was passed that no live fish could be shipped out of state there wouldn't be many large fish taken. Most of the big live fish end up in pay lakes in other states.

Great point Fish... That is the issue on Upper Wheeler and Lower Guntersville. A yank has bought the Minner (not our Minner) farm on Hwy 79 and is loading it and pay ponding it. A guy in SCA say they have had "confrontations" with some of the guys shipping fish to this man. I am not sure what to believe. I know Southerncats is spear heading an effort to get some laws enacted in Alabama. I'm all for it, and am ready to write or call whoever is needed.

I truly think this has had a negative effect on Wheeler catfishing.

For the past few months I've noticed a huge whaler-type rig getting breakfast and ice at least 2 or 3 times a week at the Texaco near Mud Creek. The rig sports Oklahoma tags, and the boat is registered in OK. These guys don't apprear to be sport-fishermen. Reckon' there ain't no catfish in Oklahoma anymore?
