First off, Thanks to Bbass / Bill for giving me some contact numbers when I called you. And A very Big thanks for Eric for coming to my aid in a time of need. emoWorthy

I was on my way to Parksville to do some Fathers day fishing and my car started to really act up. Loss of power and jerking. I got there just to turn back around as my car was barely able to tow my small boat.

I put more tranny fluid in and motor oil and neither made it run better. I was limping it back home on HWY 64 and just passed the flea market and about to top that small incline when the motor conked out right on the road and no where to pull off to or go into the grass filled ditch. I was almost blocking that small wine and cheese shops driveway.

Ok so a sheriff shows up...... That's cool. NOT!!!! he rushed me to get a tow truck before getting someone from the forums emergency contact list to come pull my boat for me. I used 18th Street Towing on S Lee before so he called them for me.

They show up then my girlfriend shows up but no one with a hitch except the tow truck. I asked if he was keeping my boat and he said not if I can get someone to get it when we arrive there. I was able to reach Eric (Spurhunter) and he gladly offered to come and help me get my boat back to my storage unit. As usual I offered what I could afford for gas and he turned me down.

So now on to the Biggest crock of BULLSH*T I've ever heard. emoBadLanguage
We follow the tow truck and after we arrive there I asked if I was still able to get my boat as a friend was on his way.

We arrive and I get out and asked if it was to late to get the boat, someone was on the way. The driver said sure, It will cost you $150 bucks just to get my boat and another $150 for the car..... $300 total for a tow in Sunday!!!!
WTH!!!!!
I asked him why he didn't tell me it was going to cost me $150 to get my boat. I never would have let him touch it while out there. The cop was forcing the issue is why! He said he made a call while towing the car back and was told it would cost me $150 at that time.

Do any of you know any tow companies that charge that much to tow just a few miles? It was something like 10 miles.

I was able to get my rods and tackle bag from my car, but he was rushing me and said I was only able to get a couple more items and had to leave the rest. emoAngry

This is HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!!!!! emoPolice I'm calling them tomorrow to see what line they give me. I will have to scrap the car as I just put $560 into the brakes on the 8th of this month. The muffler system is shot, could cost another $400. The front struts are wore out too and the car sways like crazy.

OK. for the record - I'm not wanting prayers or sympathy. Bad luck comes in threes. The brakes was 1, the cars engine blowing up is 2. the third will be that I can't get another vehicle, lol SH*T HAPPENS and that's life.

Thanks again Eric / Spur. I owe you a big favor.

That sure isnt right... you should file a complaint to the better bussiness bureau and see what could be done. That is some bull crap! They should not charge for the boat after what the guy said before the tow. I live just off HWY 64, I would've been right there to help you tow that boat if you had my number. Sorry about the troubles...

Sorry you had such a rough time! Broadcast the tow company's name so we all know who not to deal with.
Screw the BBB, I was a member for 3 yrs and when tne old M&M Marine screwed me they didn't do squat for me.
Way to be there Spur! emoThumbsup
Hope it all works out for you Shark!

150 for each vehicle is crazy, I had our work van towed from calhoun Ga to ringgold(about 45 miles and it's a full sized diesel van) and the flatbed wrecker came from ringgold to pick it up and it was only 100.00. Sorry for your bad luck, I would give the towing company a call.

Thanks guys and gals.

emoSorry For the long post, I really think some that know me a little here would like to hear the good news.

My nephew called me for fathers day and asked how things were so I told him. (we're very close and have been all his life as well as my sister and brother in law too).
He is giving me a car he was giving to someone for working on his van. work wasn't done so he insisted I take the car and refused to take form of payments for it. emoBawl And it has a hitch already installed! emoParty
My sister and brother in law have always tried to give me money when I visited them saying they helped my other brother. I always refused and was glad to just spend time with them. Well my nephew called them and they are loaning me the money to take care of the towing, a bus ticket to Ms to get the car and some pocket change. emoBawl I'll also be able to stay around 2 weeks and visit / go fishing with him and his son. Last night was an emotional night for me, darn tough guy act didn't work this time. emoRedface

This morning I called two other towing companies and told them what happened. One said it may have been because the emoBadLanguage officer made the call to the towing company. I wasn't given enough time to have my girlfriend call someone from home. BUT!!!! both companies were not surprised when they asked who it was. Looks like 18th Street Towing in Cleveland; Located on S. Lee St already has a bad reputation with other towing companies.

Max fee total from other companies would have been less than $125 TOTAL!!!! for car and boat.

FIRST I'LL TALK TO THEM IN PERSON WHEN I GET THE MONEY IN HAND THIS AFTERNOON. GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO MAKE IT RIGHT.
IF THEY STAND FIRM AND DEMAND THE $300 - I WILL SLANDER THEIR COMPANY FOR RIPPING ME OFF.

I'll make signs and put on vehicles.

I talked to the owner of 18th St Towing (Charles) and he amended the towing for me. He explained why the initial fee was so high. With the sheriff there rushing to get the road cleared and the truck drivers under pressure from the sheriff. It also seems too many folks abandon thier vehicles when the motor blows up. The tow truck hauls the vech to the yard and the owners don't make any attempts to pay the tow fee and then leave the vech there and the tow company has to haul it to the scrap yard to get any payment.

The extra charge for the boat is because the same thing happens with campers etc. Owners get the camper/boat whatever and then never come back to get the blown vech.

Bottom line is - He is only charging me $50. I get my boat and I'm letting him keep the car to scrap it. He's happy I'm not picking up the boat and running off and just leaving it there with out contacting them and I'm happy to get my personal property and boat too.

18th Street Towing came through and did the right thing.... Thank you Charles for making another customer happy. emoParty emoDance

Even though I'll have a car by then - I'll be there for the cleanup no matter what!!! Even if I have to walk there. I feel it's the least I can do for the help.

Spur is one of the many great folks here on the forum.

I hear that Spur's a pretty good guy

He is! I read all about him on the wall in the bathroom at the truckstop last night. emoPoke emoBigsmile

My Brother had that happen when he got a flat tire on I-985 in GA. It was around 11pm and the sherriff that came MADE him call a tow truck. He had friends that could be there in 30 minutes to help, but the officer said it was too dangerous for him to sit there on a 20ft wide shoulder off the interstate.

I can however understand them being a little more pushy if your blocking the road.

Glad they eneded up taking care of you, though it should have taken you raising Cain for it. IMO
