Finally got out fishing yesterday after a month and a half. Only got to fish for little over an hour.

The Bend:

11 spots with none over 13 inches

3 lm, one 14 inches and two under 12 inches

1 four foot long gar brought into the boat and quickly released after some thrashing around

1 blue cat at 4 pounds and 3 ounces

Caught on fly rods and baitcasters with spinnerbaits being the only lure used other than topwaters on the fly rod.

Andrew,

Thanks for the post. I fished below the dam all day yesterday. I am assuming the bend would have been the rip-rap around Moccasin Bend. What boat was you fishing out of? I was in a black/white Triton and was fishing "the Bend" between 2-4 P.M. yesterday.I had some small spots and 1 nice small mouth.

We got there around 6pm. I always put in at that little ramp in suckcreek and go up the river to about the start of the bend and come back down. I got a tracker 175 and drive a red expedition so if you ever see that one down there anywere that would be me.

Today sept. 16th the bend.

7 LM over 14 inches

13 spots between 10 and 13 inches

1 cat at 6 pounds and 4 ounces

most were caught just a gulp sinking minnow with a red wide gap hook throwing round the banks and fall downs. 2 came on a chatterbait and a few on a rapala skitter pop.

Hey Bandit,

Do you have an idea of how many total bass, spots, Lm & Sm both over and under 12"?

Thanks,
Alan

Only got to fish bout hour and half due to the current being quite strong this trip..

Monday 18th at suckcreek:

9 Spots: all under 14 inches but one was actually weighed at 4 pounds and 3 ounces but sorry forgot to measure him cause i was too excited bout catching another spot that big and just as i was heaving my arm to thro him back in i was like uh oh... 3 actually was hardly longer than the berkley frenzy crankbait i was using.

3 LM two under 15 and one at 17 inches.

I can get accurate lengths of each fish if you need it like that or i can just keep throwing them on the golder ruler and just checking them quick??

I find it interesting all these facts and figures. One thing that puzzles me though .. you all give the length measurements of everything EXCEPT gar .. why is that???

He started thrashing around pretty bad and I wasnt about to grab him the way he was bouncing everywheres. I actually just cut my spinnerbait which was wedged in his mouth. The teeth never got anywhere near my line which was the new "g string" by spiderwire. First one i ever even got into the boat.

Besides i wouldnt have been able to measure him anyways cause my golden ruler only goes up to bout 24 i think.

Oh I was just messing with ya Andrew. I don't even try to boat a gar even if he would fit my ruler.

:) Sounds like you had fun though. Sorry you lost your spinner. I'd cut mine off too as long as it wasn't the one RR gave me ... I'm afraid that gar would die before I'd cough over that one!

Great report, Andrew. I would be blown away to catch a 4 lb Spot. My personal best after over 50 years of bass fishing is a little over 3 lb.

As far as measuring your fish goes, I want to know how many Lm & Sm you catch that are over and under 12". So, when you say you caught 2 less that 15", were they less than 12"?

I appreciate everyone's effort to help with my survey.

You guys need to go down to neely henry reservoir or even weiss and fish for those coosa river spots. They actually get pretty big and they are a lot of fun to catch. you can catch lots of three pounders down there. They are a little harder to catch though than the kentucky spots.

I don't necessarily want to catch larger spots, I'm afraid if something isn't done about the spots in the Chic tailwaters, There won't be anything but spots there.
