Wow, I feel bad for the guy.

Nice photo, but I highly doubt that fished weighted over 6 lbs. Check out the scale of his fingers to the length of the fish.

Nice fish.If it was 22 inches long I would guesstimate about 6 or 7 pounds. It didn't seem to have a big belly. I like to hold them way out to the camera for effect too.;)

I have seen a picture of the 11lb 15oz smallmouth and that Canadian fish is a nice one but it looks like maybe 7-8 lbs at the most to me.

Well now that ya'll have mentioned it, the fish had to be less than 7lbs. (Definately)

Just like what R14 said, look at the guys fingers and then look at the fish. Also the heaviest bass I've caught at 22 inches was 6lbs, but had a big belly on it.

A 22 in. smallmouth is a great fish, but there has been a 24-1/2" smallmouth caught right here in Chickamauga according to the TWRA website. One has to be at least 20" just to be a TARP qualifying smallie. A 25" girth?????? NOT!!! And using the general formula length x girth x girth divided by 800, the dimensions he claims would give a weight of 17+ pounds. Something smells fishy with this one!

Nice that this idjit makes international news thanks to a service like ESPN, who apparently has no one on staff who can judge a fishing photo. I concur, nowhere near a record, and I am "not a smallmouth fisherman." He knew what he cut up, but he and his buddies figured that picture came out oversized enough they just might convince some folks that it had been a record setter.

He may not fish for smallmouth, but he sure does fish for suckers.

inthebox30lbs - 9/21/2007 6:01 PM if thats 12.6 pounds the spots I have been catching down in the river are all between 4 and 5 pounders :)

If he weighed the head and guts along with the filets, it probably had 5 lbs. of maggots mixed in!

I got a 24 1/2 '' smallie up near the nuke a couple of years or so ago. It had a 16 1/2 inch girth and was only 7lb 10 oz.. on a digital scale. I have the tarp for it.

Steve, that must be the one listed! I didn't look up who. Congrats! That would be the largest one caught and submitted since TARP started, right? Whoo-eee! Congrats again!!

I think when he weighed it he forgot to thaw the fillets out and ended up wieghing about 5 or 6 pounds of good ole frozen H2O

I just do not think that fish in the pic is all that big. If it is then that guy has got some mamoth sized fingers to go with those dirty nails.

No way 12 pounds. I've caught a spot below Chickamauga Dam bigger than that. 5 pounds maybe. The spot I caught was 20.5 long 16" girth if I remember right. It was just 5pds. and change.

That man has got to be crazy if he thinks that is the world record. It sure is a nice fish, but i have cought bigger on a fly. That fish may weigh 6lbs or so. NO WAY THAT FISH IS A RECORD!

this picture has been going around for a long time one the web. I think he is just confused. He must have caught two fish and combined their weights or something!
