I am about to buy a boat, motor , trailer in Tenn. My question is, Since I have lived in two other states, What do I actually have to get from the buyer to make a smooth transition at DMV?
Boat Title?
Trailer Title?
Motor Title?
Bill of Sale?
w/ amount, date, model, etc?
What else do I need?
If there is not a tilte of some of the above in TN, how do I know that there is no lien on that item?

I AM LOST? PLEASE HELP SOON!
Thanks

As far as I know all you need in Tn. for a boat is a bill of sale, if you just moved here from another state you probably don't need that. It is a lot easier to get the paper work done in the small counties than it is in chatt. If you just bought a boat they will ask you how much you gave for it and charge you tax on that amount, they won't question the value unless you tell em a very low price.

Its according to how old the boat is I think, or atleast in GA. If its an older boat, you can get a bill of sale(make sure the boat, trailer, and motor are listed w/ the VIN). If its newer and you take out a loan for it, you should have a title for the boat, motor, and trailer from the person you purchase it from, if not a bill of sale will work and the bank will make you a title. Im not positive on this, but if I remember correctly this is true.

I just sold a boat for my dad when the guy went to get i registered at the court house they gave him a bill of sale there that both parties had to fill out and have it notorized by a notary public before they would even talk to him that is in cleveland dont know if it is different anywhere else or not

Most people get a bill of sale when they make the transaction, especially if you dont know each other very well. If you pay cash for something and dont recieve a bill of sale or title, there is no evidence that you purchased anything, so a crooked person could just keep your money.

I think your correct Doc1, I live in Ga but bought a boat from a guy in Tn and thats all we had to do. They do your insurance the same way in Ga, you tell them a number on what you want to insure or atleast State Farm does it that way.

In TN hamilton County You need all you need is a bill of sale, with boat hull number , and owners registration card number on the bill of sale , length, make model, and boat vin number , and name ph and address of seller and buyer, both must sign.

Each county varies on what is required in Hamilton County that is all that is needed, of course they will look up the blue book value, and even if you bought the boat below blue book they will try to charge you taxes on blue book value, thats where the notary comes in handy .. how they gonna argue what you paid when its notarized.

I gave this guy a bill of sale along with the registration card on the boat but they have a specific bill of sale they use up here for some reason (they are strange) plus havin itnitarized we both had to go to the notery public and sign the other bill of sale before he would notorize it

One key note to mention to save you alot of money... get two bills of sale, 1. with the boat itself on it and the boat hull number, 2 a bill of sale for the motor and trailer with both the motor vin and trailer vin... ie.. why. In tennessee they only tax you on the blue book value of the boat, not the motor or the trailer. I just bought a 99 20xd bullet for 13500, the boat value listed for 5500 and the motor and trailer together were another 8500 by book. I only had to pay taxes on the bill of sale for the 5500 vs 13500 i paid for it all. Keeps a little extra cash in your pocket and not in the goverments.

gotta to have it in TN notorized that is

You don't have to have it notarized in Hamilton County Ive bought and sold 3 boats in last 4 yrs never once was asked to have bill of sale notarized, at least not on the boats I've bought 1977, 1972, and 1987 never once needed the bill of sale notarized.

Well I had to my Allison. They would not take just the registration card. They told me that in the state of TN a bill of sale has to be notrized. May it just depends who you get a the court house. This was in Cleveland and the guy i traded with was in Knoxville and he had to do the samething. So I just know what happened to me.
