I live in Ga, but fish in Tn. I bought a used boat and got a bill of sale but the previous owner lost the registration card. The old registration number is still on the hull. Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing registered?

if you live in ga then you will have to reg it down there.but you can reg with out card all you need is bill of sell.and have to pay tax on it thats all they want is that money.

fishnboy...... actually the TWRA told me that i needed to register mine in Tennessee because thats where its in the water the most.... but i dont think i TECHNICALLY matters where you register it... but thats what TWRA told me

... supposed to be registered in your state of residence! Where you fish has nothing to do with it! In Ga, you have to register and have a license plate along with your new set of numbers. Just take the bill of sale to where ever you purchase your auto tags.

Register it in GA, its really easy and all they need is a picture of the hull ID # and a notarized bill of sale. I did it over the phone and it took 5 minutes.

? ... I thought it had to be your home state!? I just don't think so. If Georgia stopped you with Ga. plates on your vehicle, you had a Ga. drivers license, pulling a boat with no tag and a Tenn. registration card, I think your going to be in trouble! Georgia is going to want their registration and tag fee too! I know that the poor 'ol knucklehead police in Fort Oglethorpe stopped me three different times in less than 9 months for no trailer tag on my boat. It took me forever to get them to understand that I was a Tenn, resident and that the numbers and card WAS the registration with no tag required. Also Georgia this last year had several big round up and arrests, on the apartment / rental people in the Rossville, Ringgold and Fort Ogle areas because they were registering their cars in Tenn. to avoid the much bigger Ga. license plate fees.

According to the people at the old courthouse in downtown (I was there Thursday to register the boat I just bought, and I live in GA) you need to register it in the state in which the boat will be used in primarily....plus it's easier to register your boat in TN, all you need is the bill of sale, you don't need the old registration card.

KEY WORDS HERE: NOTARIZED BILL OF SALE

I bought my boat a few years ago and in TN you did not need it notarized BUT TN changed their law about 6 months before I purchased my boat. Got lucky that my folks knew a notary and got it resolved but could have put me out a few days.

And my Bill of Sale wasn't notorized when i went last week, they are really helpfull downtown too, i'd stay away from bonny oaks, that place is heck to get in and out of.
