The Tobacco Smoke Enema was used between 1750-1810. It was used to infuse tobacco smoke up a person's rectum for varius medical purposes, primarily for the resuscitation of drowning victims. A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum. The warth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration. Doubt about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phase, "blow smoke up one's ass". emoGeezer
