Had my bird out this afternoon when the winds calmed down a bit. Started out good and was following me about 40feet up in the trees. We were out for about 15 minutes and he started chasing 2 squirrels. One ended up going into a hol but the other went up high in he tree. He chased him for 15 minutes looking at me and going up when I called for him to and spiraled up and down the tree about 20 times. The squirrel then started jumping trees and he was right on his tail. Caught him in the tops of one tree and helicoptered down to the ground. I helped on the dispatch and the squirrel weighed 600 grams, a nice big female. He had a hold on the head this time and wasnt going to get bit again. I have pics I can post as well. Landon

Can someone tell me how to post pics or email me to post them??

Sounds cool !

Best way to post pics is to open up an account at photobucket.com (free). Then you can upload the photos to your personal album and copy the IMG code from the photo you want to your post.

Lets see if this works. If so the first is from last week and the other 2 are today.

Absolutely unbelieveable!!!! What a fabulous time that must be!!! If you are EVER in Marion Cty, TN, let me know. I'd love to see that as well as bring along my two boys. I had never thought that I could do something like that. Would love to learn more about it. And I thought watching my dog hunt was exciting and fun...

Deadeye Tha's realy neat. How hard is it to care for the bird? How did you get into it? Keep us up to date.

Deadeye, when are you going to teach the bird to fish? I am like the others, how did you get into falconry, is the training hard to do, where did you get the bird?

Hey guys sorry I havent been on lately. Been tied up around the house since I cant take my bird out right now after his surgery. But to answer some questions its not all that hard to care for them, just feed them what they catch and supplement it if need be with rats. I first got into it when one of my teachers talked to me about it and I went out with him and his bird 6 years ago. After that just read books and started learning all I could to pass the state exam before I could get my state and federal permits. As for how I got the bird, your first two years you're an apprentice under someone and have to trap a wild passage or young hawk and train it. Falconry is the highest regulated and most enforced means of hunting of any kind. Each bird is different just like dogs, they all have their own personality and can be hard headed. I had this bird trained and hunting in 2 weeks and my last one took a month and half. If anyone has anymore questions just ask away or you can PM me.

That is really cool! What kind of hawk is it? Hard to tell from the pictures, but doesn't look like a redtail. Do you ever do demonstrations at schools/ science classes? Do you have more than one bird?

would enjoy more photos if you have any (with or w/o prey)

He is a redtail. Immature(passage) birds have a dull brown tail and then when they are a year old in the spring we put our birds up for the moult when they slowly lose all their feathers and regrow the new adult ones and thus get the red tail they are known for. This is the only bird I have right now, thinking about getting another this coming sept. either a goshawk, kestrel, coopers or maybe a harris hawk. No I do not do demonstrations at schools but sometimes I fly my bird at Harrison Bay park and sometimes talk to people that stop me while Im out there.
