I finnally got my boat out today .. for the first time .. long story ..since I put the 150hp I traded for my 90hp .. any way .. after playing with it finnally got it to plane out right .. jack plate and bigger motor had to figure out the proper trim level to make it not hop.. finally figured that out .. and it was on .. I kept bumpin the throttle forward.. I never did give it all it had .. and I have no idea how fast I was going ... but I was passing every thing on the water.. I had a jet ski that passed me and waved bye bye as he passed .. I was just cruising .. I couldnt stand it lol..

I put the hammer down .. and went flying past him .. he gave it all he had but never did catch me lol .. and of course I saluted him as I went past emoTskTsk rflol

.. Id say I was doing at least 70 .. and still had a god bit of throttle.. sure does shoot out of the hole .. would be better with the right prop.. instead of the generic prop it has.

I like it needless to say .. tried to fish but stupid trolling motor died .. or I have a wiring issue.. tried to diagnose it on the water .. but .. only tools I had was a knife .. and a can opener lol .. neither where much help lol.. I think its just a wiring issue.. or at least I hope so

I did manage even with trolling motor not working to find a couple fish .. both where on jigs in a brush pile that I fish this time of the year .. not big . 16" and 17" but Ill take em that size any day

17 ft Hydra Sport the boat weighs 800 lbs, if your boat only does 60 with a 150 must be a heavy lead sled . my fish and ski Astroglass did 60 and I never had it full throttle and it was a heavy boat

ive got a stratos 18' 10" 285 pro xl with a 150 johnson and it will only run 61...70 is moving on for a 150 i would think

Thats awesome she flies down the water!! Bet its a world of difference between the 2 engines!

Its all about what boat its on... There 2 totally different hulls and the stratos probally has a good 300 pounds on the hyrda.

It is all about the boat. Back when I fished the Federation BASS they had a 150 limit on motors in their tournaments. I had a Champion Champ bass boat. I put a 150 Fast Strike on it and worked with the guys at the boat place. We got it up to 73 MPH with a radar gun. Shows my age, that was before all these GPS stuff could tell you. emoGeezer I was one of the fastest, if not the fastest boat that fished the Arkansas BASS Federation circuit with a 150. I was passing much larger boats with bigger engines on the water but again back then the bigger engines were huge. emoBigsmile Jmax

Glad it worked out for you. Yes, a better prop will help. With the leakage may be some of the bottom end loss as that is where it really shows it's but. won't effect top end much. Couldn't remember what prop was on the engine when I put it on your boat. I have a 26 Chopper and 25 Tempest plus modified to fit a OMC and we can see how they run on it.

Another thing to remember, is the GT 150 is a under rated engine and is around 165HP. They pushed the +/- 10% hp envelope on them. Just like Mercury had the "XR" series that are under rated.

That is awesome a gt 150 is a fast engine my brother has one on his 19ft sprint and it pushes it good we do need to set it up for a little more speed i think we need to raise the jackplate up a little it isnt raised any at all rite now

I have a stratos 274 (17'-8" i think) with a johnson fast strike 150 and that thing flat out hauls, with two people, full live wells and all my gear we had it in the high 60's on my gps, so i could easlily see his 17' doing over 70.

Guys, he says "Id say I was doing at least 70" he didnt say it GPS'd at 70. Its hard to say without a GPS, my guess is somewhere in the 60's though.

My XR doesn't seem to be under rated. I have a Ranger 372v and a Merc XR 150. 54 is as fast as it's ever gone and that's with just me and a little gas going with the current on the river. That speed seems about right where it should be.

Your ranger if i'm not mistaken is a couple hundred pounds heavier than the boat he's reffering to...if i remember correctly.

The XR series is a performance series to compete with OMC GT/XP engines. They have around 15HP over a standard 150. There is a BIG difference between a XR2 (2.0L), XR4(2.4), and XR6 (2.5L). One thing you have to remember is that HP is HP with the deciding factor being cubic inches and cubic inches= TORQUE. All 3 are making around 165HP but the additional torque will allow you to turn a bigger pitch prop resulting in more speed. If you have a XR2 (2.0L 121 Cubic inches) and install a XR6 (2.5L 153 cubic inches) there will be night and day difference and will be a speed difference between the 2 on a heavier boat. That is why these newer 200's are all the way up to 3.3 Liters because they need torque to move these heavy new boats.

So if you have a 2L on the ranger that will explain the speed or it is not set up properly. 15Hp is not a huge advantage, but is some. Also be wary of swapped cowls. Treed1 on here had me look at his "XR4" 150 on a ranger and it was a 2L 150 with a different cowl. He runs around the same speed.

Another point to make is the 2L 135/150 and the XR2 150 are such a small cubic inch engine lacking torque that they also have a different ration lower unit. The 2L came factory with a 2:1 ration where the 2.4 and 2.5 come with a 1:87 and a TRUE XR4 had a small 1:78 lower. They have different ratios to be able to have a torque multiplier the same reason your car has different gears. To put it on layman's terms. If you have a manual transmission in your car the 2:1 would be like pulling out in 1st gear, the 1:87 would be like pulling out in 2nd and the 1:78 would be like pulling out in 3rd.

The same as your car, the lower gear you have it in the easier it is to take off and with the SAME RPM's the lower the gear you are in will result in slower speeds. So a 150 Xr6 turning a 23 Laser II will run faster than a 150 XR2 turning the same 23 Laser II. All factors remaining the same, there would be 7.6MPH (theoretically) difference in speed between a 2:1 ratio and 1.87 ratio turning the same prop to 6K with 10% slip.

So the HP rating of a engine is so genetic it is unreal. It is easier to compare liters to weight of a boat than HP. If you have a Light hull, then a 2L is a workhorse of a engine and hard to kill but it can not be made to have the brute torque of a 2.4 or 2.5 so they don't run as fast.

Another comparison is you have have a 350 making 400HP and a 454 making 400HP. Put them in a light race car and most of the time the 350 will run better because of lighter reciprocating weight(internals) and will turn faster RPM because of a light load than the heavy internal 454 making the same power. Then put them both in a dump truck with a load and the truck will laugh at the 350 because of the lack of torque that the 454 posses.

Yep thought I was getting a XR-4 After James looked at it it has a XR-2 power head on it. The guy I bought it from failed to tell me he had blew it up and put the XR-2 on it. At WOT trimmed out I can go a whopping 53 mph Yee Haw !! My boat is only a 17 footer!!

Well I don't know if it's a heavy sled, it's a 2006 Triton Tr-186-LE. Can't weigh no more than 1300 lbs., but then again I don't care to go over 60 anyways in a 18.5 footer as long as I get to my fishing hole , I'm happy.
