Well this year has been a slow year on our property. Ive got family land/ leased land we hunt in Putnam Co. near Center Hill Lake. I have 8 buddies that hunt with me (rarely have more than 3 or 4 hunters in the woods at any time). So far we have taken 9 does and zero bucks. We started seeing rutting/chasing activity the first week of mzl and have seen rutting activity every weekend since. On each of the 3 weekends of the first segment of gun, I saw shooter 8 pointers chasing, and just couldnt close the deal, each time the bucks were running does and never presented clean broad side shots, the biggest one I could see plain as day, but didnt want to shoot at a target moving 100mph.

this is the 8th year we have kept "quality managment practices" in place. Our rule is simple; if you shoot a buck, you mount it! If you need meat or wanna watch something die; shoot a doe! This is a loose rule that allows my buddies to take what they consider to be a trophy, and not what me or anyone else thinks is a trophy, and trust me we all have different standards. Basically this managment system has resulted in being able to see antlered bucks just about everytime I sit on stand. I consider a hunt successful when I able to see and pass on deer, killing one is just icing on the cake!

I had a buddy ask me if I was sick of trophy managment practices and ready to shoot a smaller buck. My reply was NO WAY! I am convinced that as these bucks get older, they are getting super smart and the only way to bust one is to catch him chasing, have him pushed on you, or just plain old luck.

I've learned that good time spent at the deer camp with good friends and family is as valuable as all the bucks on my wall.

Wish you all the best of luck for the rest of the season! I got 2 more weekends left, and if I have to go buckless I will still thank God for every minute I have in the woods, and a safe return home to my family.

Sounds like smart herd management practices to me! Churley, remember, "if it ain't broke" ect. I feel the same way everytime I'm out on the water. If I catch nothing, I still can't help but think just how lucky I am to be there!

No doubt your doing it right, I would probably take more does personally, but sounds like your having good success! Keep it up, you cant beat good times at camp.

emoScratch At least you get to see dear. I hunt National Forest in N. Ga and if we see or even jump a deer it was a good day. The deer have seem to have gone to nocturnal movement in my areas. I hunted all last weekend and even Monday. I followed tracks and glassed over hillsides and walked miles and couldn't even see one bedded on a sunny slope. I have killed a few nice bucks and countless does on this property but a two-year-old clearcut I'm afraid has taken our deer heard. I think they have moved in. emoAngry All of the privet I have seen around the edges was tracked up and picked on pretty good but all the sign and tracks looked like overnite feeding. emoConfused These deer on public land get very smart very quick but its the challenge that makes me go back and enjoy a nice morning in the woods. emoTongue

Good post Churly! Especially the part about enjoying camp with friends & family, that's what its all about right there. Like someone said before me, them shooters that got by will be there next year & you'll be excited knowing they are there. Best of luck with your next 2 weekends & Happy New Year to you & yours!!

I like to hear about people enjoying themselves vs. people complaining about not killing or catching anything. When i moved to chattanooga i practically quit hunting due to the fact that there isn't much public land and it's almost impossible to get on a descent lease. And the big reason is hunting was something i enjoy doing with my father. So now about 2-3 times a year me and him get together and spend the whole weekend hunting, just the two of us. So when you said you enjoy time with family and friends you said the best thing anyone can say about any kind of outdoor activity. Be thankful for family, friends, and the ability to enjoy these outdoor activities with them.

Spur, we've popped 34 does in 3 seasons and 4 bucks! The limiting factor for me is TWRA. I dont understand why they took my rifle season doe opportunities away this year!? Less than half a mile down the road you can shoot 3 a day in Smith Co. We were limited to bow and mzl for doe kills.

rumors of some late chasing in the area have me pumped for this weekend's hunt!

Hang in there, it will happen. Persistence and patience goes a LONG way in the woods. I have hunted QDM properties for years and the biggest thing we managed was the buck to doe ratio. The more does that are on your property the less the bucks have to move around during the rut. I hunted some property for 2 years in a row and NEVER saw the first "shooter" buck but after we started getting the does out year 3 was unbelievable, there were several bucks taken in the 130 and 140 range and one scored 160!!! Have you tried any scents? Here is a link to what I use, this stuff is incredible. It's taken off the deer when you order it and it really works!!!

Churly, me and my old buddies started camping about 45 years ago, started out with just a an old tarp then we progressed through out the years. We hunted the same mountain all those years then progress hit and now our mountain belongs to the rich and famous. Glad you are seeing the big picture!

P.S. IT WILL HELP WITH THE MEMORIES IF YOU LAY OFF THE CHICKEN WATER emoLaugh

That's crazy stuff right there. They need to be EXPANDING unit L type limits, not pulling back. Let me know next year during the BP season, I will come help you whack some slicks, (thats all I ever see anyways!)emoBang emoLaugh emoLaugh </p>
