Transom Repair

It can be repaired, how much depends on how deep the damage goes, generally these type of problems are on boats with plywood core transoms, moisture gets it from the top cap, drain plugs, or bolt holes that mount the motor. Sometimes this damage can be done if you hit a underwater obstruction like stump, rocks, etc but ussually the prop and skeg take the damage and the transom is unscathed.
The cost to fix can be as low as 800 or as high as 3500 , but expect something in the middle to the upper end of the scale. depending on the age of the boat it may not be worth the cost to repair, if you have to pay someone to fix.
You can do it your self if you have mecahnical ability, and willing to get covered in fiberglass dust, and if you do it in your garage etc it too will be covered in that dust, and the chemicals involved are hazerdous to breath, lots of ventilation and a resperator is required. But yo can do it if you choose to do so .. Ive done several for my self.
Cost to do it your self to replace transom if that is the only issue, will be about 300

The only place I know that still does fiberglass work in Chattanooga is Custom Boat works 7717 Hixson Pike 423-842-2000

Thanks for the reply. I called and talked a really nice gentleman and he qouted me a price I can afford. His price was better than any other price I was quoted this morning.

Hey that's great to hear buddy. I have heard alot of good things about them, and being that they're just right up the road is a big plus too! Keep us updated!

I wouldnt call decherd right up the road lol .. but I guess its kind of the country mile lol

Cool man, I know you'll be pleased with their work. Heck you'll be able to put a 300 promax on that trannie when ya get it all done if you wanted to!

There aint no competition for fiberglass boat repair in Chattanooga, so they charge what ever they want.. if you pay fine if not someone else will... like the big cabin cruisers that run aground from being morons

Ive often thought about doing it .. but everyone Ive talked to dosent want to fix an old boat .. well they want to fix they just want flea market pricing.. I gave estimates to a few people on replacing floor or transom and they about fell over .. and I was 1/4 of what anyone else would have charged .. so I axed that idea.
Ive even offered to help a few people on here .. walk them thru the process step by step for free.. just to help them out .. still didnt take up my offer .. oh well ..

a lot of people think you can just lay any old piece of plywood over a rotted floor put carpet over that and its fixed LOL yea fixed for maybe a summer. until the wood under the prob rots completely away and then the piece you glued or screwed down rots too .. then you have a much bigger mess to fix, or pay to fix .. or try and sell to someone else to fig out how to fix.
Or think that bolting aluminum plate on the transom to STRENGTHEN it will fix the problem oh it will until the wood rots completely way the fiberglass breaks and your motor falls in the lake.

Do you self a favor .. if it has been strengthened by such a technique run hard and fast, also tap on a transom with a screw driver .. if rotting and you listen closely you will here hard and hollow places its rotting and soon to be gone .. your engine is soon to be swimming with the fishes and maybe you too

There is an old man in clevland TN (can't remember his name) that has been repairing boats for 40 years he repaired my cracked transom on a center consol for $700.00 Call dalton marine for his tele# I don't think you will beat his quality or price.

300 - 400 sounds a tad cheap .. get referrals , and numbers of past customers you can talk to, is he bonded and insured, and does he give warranty on his work 1-5 years ?
