Trap rods

I use a 7' Medium action American Rodsmiths fiberglass with 10 lb. Floroclear P-Line. I'll probably go to 15 lb. when the grass gets up a little more.

7 ft medium action allstar with 14 lb. florocarbon. try to keep one also with 20 mono just to try if i`m not getting bit with the 14. Keeps the bait alot higher in the water.

The 3 custom CB rods that I had built have made a believer out of me w/ regards to using a LOT slower action for cranks. I've lost way less fish and the cranks are always deep inside their mouths. I'll vote for moderate taper on cranks all day. All CB reels are spooled with 10lb Big Game.

I've played with line sizes & weights of cranks, dep. on the wind.Exp.- You can have a 1/4oz. on 8Lb. test & it fall at one speed. The wind picks up you can have 1/2 on 15-17Lb test still be able to cast & fish it but not as fast on the fall with the heaver line.

But with Traps (cranks) I believe you get alot better action on 8-10Lb. test. What do you guys think. More action, smaller strike zones in colder ware?, Also med-med light rods in helping you land more fish, you guy jump in here.

Redefine how you classify the "action" of the rod Steve. To say "med" or "med light" doesn't mean much for cranks if the rod still bends in the last 1/3 of the blank. To really improve the hook ratio when using cranks, you've GOT to get that true parabolic action where the bend is pretty consistent from just in front of the handle all the way to the tip. If the backbone of the rod is still in the first 2/3 of the blank, you'll still not get that improved performance. For years that action was relegated to fiberglass, but recently blank manufacturers have been able to reproduce this action in high modulous graphite. They still feel like a buggy whip, but they're lighter.

Lighter lines will improve the action of any bait, but it's more evident in cranks.

Absolutely, positively ditto what RR said. Soft action rods and somewhat stretchy line. 8-10 pound line. I like the P-Line cx Premium for cranks.

American Rodsmiths Proset and Quantum TE Medium Action. 12-15lb mono usually. I throw 14lb flouro on the Big G in the grass.
Does anyone use braid? If so what lb test?

fritz noodle rod(american rodsmiths 6'6" for traps 7 for big cranks) i believe this model is pure fiberglass I could be wrong (and usually am) and 15# flouro. i also use the reel that came on the combo 4:3:1 ratio
slower equals deeper on the big cranks also easier on the elbows. i will however drop to 10# while throwing the big boys.Give you guys some advice(from regular all-american fisherman Sam Moody)
i fished with him last yr. in the first g-ville tourney you guys remember 31 degrees snow wind and so forth
I picked his brain alot that day. he had two rods. one fiberglass old style with a old abu 3:6: ratio and another lite action rod with a jerkbait. trap rod (fiberglass) had flouro on he said from past experiences
he felt like he got a extra bite or two a day because of the flouro. We all know that 1 or two bites could mean a payday or not. i threw traps on braid. yeah i had one 5# but he had 4 fish i know that is not setting the world on fire, but was enough to make me try it out .went back a week later in a small tourney, and caught 30 fish most keepers all about the same size.Like most of us here on the forum i had heard all this info before but seeing it in action and putting it into practice made me a believer.
Sorry about the long post but the words from a regular tourney angler like Mr. Moody i think are worth passing along.he was by the way a joy to fish with and very nice and knowlegable fellow.
hope you bfl guys get a chance to fish with him. take notes you can bet the farm you will learn some valuable lessons.

7-1/2 M Bass Pro crankin' stick on 8-10lb XT unless fishing lots of grass, then I go to a MH stick that's faster and more sensitive with 12-17lb XT.
