I fished a Tx on Douglas 3 weeks ago and the water was filled with logs and limbs and tons of really small chain saw dust size stuff. I went out last week on Loudon to do some fishing and as usual when I cranked the motor I checked the Engine Coolant temp while idling out. I noticed it only went up to about 100 degrees instead of the recommended temp of 120-125. I didn`t think too much about it at the time since thewater pressure was good. The surface temp was in the low 70`s and after a few miles run up the lake the Coolant Temp was up to the normal temp of 125-130. The low temp at idle continued the rest of the day. After a little researchI decide it must be the thermostats hanging open. Called my guys at Bunch Marine and they worked me the next day and cleaned the trash out of my T-stats for a minimal charge. You would be surprised to see how small the debris was plugging the T-stats. There was a couple of pieces in each one the size of a cucumber seed maybe.

I bought this 225ProXS last year and also installed the MercMonitor system at the same time. While reading up and learning about the new engine I remember talk about cold seizure problem in the bottom cylinderwhen shutting down too quickly in cold water. The recommendation was to idle the engine after a run to allow it to return to 125 degree range before shutting the engine off. The same holds true even in warmer water...the operating temp for the Opti is Minimum of 120 or so. There is no alarm or auto shutdown (Guardian ) for low temps ...I`m sure you would probably get one when the cylinder starts to seize though !

If you own one of the high dollar (or whatever price...they are all expensive to replace) engines.....I would recommend you install some way to monitor your engine coolant temps inside the motor. Just knowing the water pressure is not enough on these newer engines. I got the MercMonitor for about 400$ installed and it is NMEA compatable with nearly any later model electronics...GPS/ Depthfinders, radar, weather....etc. You can set up the pages to monitor everything the Merc engine does and gives you a description of any problem the Guardian System detects. I`m sure Yamaha and OMC has systems similar to the SmartCraft stuff available.

Just remember just because the engine is peeing doesn`t necessarily mean everything is right.
