My best friend that I grew up with and I have been trying for years to get our kids together, we finally matched up schedules and went up on the parkway to our old stompin' grounds to places we went in high school with our dates and families as kids. It was pretty busy on this day, but I'm told it's not normally this busy with people. If you want to have a great time outdoors, and spend VERY LITTLE money-except gas- take a picnic, pack a cooler and some towels and head to the Davidson River in the Pisgah National Forest outside of Brevard, NC. Really great time. Not a better place to go when the heat is so high. Hope you enjoy the pics. The last one was for my Mother. She got all worried and scared. She almost started crying. She is a nurse in the OR and has seen the worst of the worst as far as accidents go. She said "People hit thier head and DIE up there!!!!" We told her that if you could die up there, we would have when we were 16 and going up there, but it's gonna be okay Mom! So, my buddy Shawn took my camera and came back with "Here, I took some pics of Augie for your Mom." emoLaugh

Man, that looks like fun. how long does it take to get there from chatt??
There are many places like this (without the waterfalls and sliding rock) along the French Broad River on 25/70 on the other side of Lake Douglas. I get off at the Dandridge exit and drive all the way to Weaverville, NC where my parents live.

It takes about 3 1/2 hrs to get to Asheville.... it's south of there off the Blue Ridge Pkwy is how we got there, but you can drive to Brevard, NC and follow signs up to Davidson River which is about 8 or so miles out of Brevard. You'll signs to Sliding Rock/Looking Glass falls. All of what I took pics of is on the same road and all within 8-10 mi of each spot we stopped. There are picnic areas all along the river, multiple waterfalls, only one on the main road, the others have nice hiking trails up to. We didn't do that because we didn't want to tote the cooler up a mountain. ANY MOUNTAIN! Though back in the day, we used to hike all over the place and there are some wonderful spots off the beaten path. We went to the ones right on the "main drag" and had a time trying to find a spot to park and a picnic table. You should be able to find it on the web pretty easily. If you like I can send you the coordinates for GPS, I saved it as a waypoint in the car. All of what we did was free! Except the gas and groceries, but I assure you it was a better time and a HELL of a lot more affordable than Riverbend. We're going there tonight, I'll let you know the comparison.

NA,

Boy, those pics bring back some good times! I grew up in Greenville, SC & headed to Brevard area almost every weekend. Went to college at Mars Hill & those mountains were my stomping grounds. Some awesome trout fishing all around tht area. I'm heading over there the week after the 4th.

Well, FA, it's kinda hard to get ME in the pictures when I'm the one with the camera. My buddy Shawn and I took one of each of us with the boys and one of just us for ourselves. But the trip was to show what WE did. You know how it goes.... I'm sure there are plenty of pics with your family and you are amazingly absent! It's called being Dad! Wouldn't have it any other way. Just as my Dad is absent in most pics from our childhood.

Man that looks like alot of fun! I might have to make a trip up there with the fam soon!
