My dad is having some trouble with his trolling motor or thinks he is. Last couple of time we went fishing his batteries just dont hold up..So we went fishing this morning an after about an hour had to change batteries. Hooked the other one up same thing.. when we got back home plugged the charger up to the first one an charger said it was basically full charge so changed it to the new battery an yes it is brand new. It did need charged but was not to the point of being dead. Even with them fully charged the troll motor just dont pull the boat like i think it should. Its a minn kota edge 45lb thrust on a 16ft boat an it you dont have it on 3 it just wont pull good.. Could it be the troll motor not throwing the right volt.. Oh the troll motor is only to years old.. Any ideals would be helpful

This was happening to my 70 pound edge. Turns out that the lower unit that houses the armature was leaking and letting water in. Water is highly resistant to DC current in fact it almost does not conduct it at all. Anyway the point is that your lower unit is likely being inundated with water and that will cause this to happen. You can purchase a brush kit from northland marine web site. This kit wll replace everything in the unit except the armature and housing, all seals and bearings.

Take the prop off and get that ball of mono off the shaft that gets hot and causes extreme draw on the batteries and causes Drag that greatly reduces the pulling power. Always go to the most obvious first. It may feel like it is turning just fine while turning it by hand however at a higher rpm it effects your TM.
