I have a brand new 12v series 27 Die Hard battery on my trolling motor. I have used it 1 time and when I got home I put it on the charger like I normally do. The charger that I have has a deep cycle mode for that type of battery. When I went to check it later the negative terminal clamp on the charger was hot enough that it almost burnt my fingers. Is this a problem with the battery? The charger did charge the battery. It just got that clamp extremely hot. I never had that problem happen with the 4 year old battery that I replaced. emoScratch

Usually a hot wire means a loose connection. We have a thermal camera at work to check for hot wires and terminals and when we find one 9 times out of 10 a wire is loose. Hope this helps.

the heat technically comes from resistance. Resistance happens at a bad connection or bad place in the wiring. Since you verified the clamp was tight, the next likely place would be corrosion, in the crimped (?) connection on the clamp. The new heat is a little easier to explain, your new battery is in perfect condition and can accept everything your charger will give it, revealing that your negative clamp is the weak link in your system. I assume you have a portable charger and if so, the heat can weaken the speak on the clamp, making things worse. The wiring on the chargers and just about everything else is barely acceptable and the slightest little thing can cause problems. I would solder the connection and probably get a new clamp, if it shows heat coloration.

How many amps were you charging it on? If its a 2/15/50 amp charger just change your setting to 2amp. 15 is to much anyway, the lower the amps when charging the better iff you are.

There's a BPS 3 bank charger on here for $75.00. I have one and love it. Just leave it plugged up all the time. It's a good investment! JMHO
