I HAVE A 24 VOLT MOTORGUIDE TROLLING MOTOR IT'S MELTING THE FUSE NOT BLOWING IT BUT I'VE CHANGED THE FUSE AND PUT IN A SMALLER FUSE IN' IT CALLS FOR A 40AMP FUSE NOW I HAVE A 30AMP FUSE IN THERE BUT IT BLEW ALSO TWO TIMES ALWAYS ON HIGH I CAN RUN ON LOW NO PROBLEMS DOES ANY BODY HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT PROBLEM IS emoBang emoBang emoBang emoThanks emoThanks

Either a short in the motor or the wire is too small for the amount of amps being drawn. I would suspect the latter.

I am with both Cheez and Doc, Also the connectors may need to be checked, the wire connectors themselves over time they get tugged onand corroded. i have inspected some wires and had them come off in my hand. some i have just re-crimped. just a thought.emoGeezer

poboy there is some good info here for you. All these guys are leading you in the right direction. I had one that done that after several years of good use and found out the hard way that the plug connector that was mounted in the console had bad connections on it. It almost caught on fire while I was fishing one day. The wiring had corroded up and caused a heat build up in the wires and fuse plug in the foot.

I would do a complete check from the motor to the plug and then from the plug to the batteries. Trust me, its not fun seeing smoke coming out of the console and a phillips screwdriver is hard to find out on the lake.emoLaugh

emoDoh emoDoh I have been an electrician for over 25 years and didn't even think of the electrician's creed. "loose wires cause fires" If the motor has been running for 12 years with no problems I will amend my previous post to say, either a short in the motor or a loose wire. emoBigsmile

My last boat got to the point that it would lick that little breaker all the time. It turned out to be loose connections in the breaker. Check that before you do anything major.

yeah but i can't blame Greg on this one and any way he has to many problems to deal with. BUT MY BOAT IS A 96 20 FOOT PROCRAFT GOT IT NEW IN 96 NO PROBLEMS TILL NOW WHY MELT THE FUSE AND NOT BLOW IT LIKE IT'S MADE TO DO emoBang emoBang

yeah i don't know i've checked the wires mite be the motor or do they have relays or something

Another place to look for a bad connection is your plug on the end of the trolling motor wire, some plugs will have flash rubber left inside of the female plug, this will cause the male plug to barely make contact, creating a small short, causing heat. The next time it melts a fuse, run your hand over the wires where ever you can all the way back to the battery, a hot spot will be your short.

Could also be that the fuse holder is not making good contact with the fuse and that is causing the melt down. I have had it happen in an RV.
