While fishing today my Johnson trolling motor started making a screeching noise and would go away after about five minutes use. Then after not running it for several minutes noise would start up again in all speeds. Anyone have any idea what my problem might be. I did check to see that nothing was wrapped around prop, etc.
Thanks
Wayne

sounds like you have a bearing dry and going out on you.

Run it out of water and listen to the lower end for the bearings on the main drive shaft to stark squealing.

I had something similar with my (very) old Johnson, I opened it up and found that one of the motor magnets had cracked and was touching the armature and was causing damage. It's that or the bearings, and neither is good news. It may still be possible to have it repaired. I went ahead and bit the bullet and replaced mine with something 20 years newer.

I have an OMC/ Johnson TM and it started doing the exact same thing last weekend. Maybe it's a bad month for OMC or something. Can you grease it or do you have to replace it?

I REPLACED THE WHOLE MOTOR ON MINE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO FOR ABOUT $60....JUST ORDERED THE PART FROM A LOCAL DEALER AND IT ARRIVED IN 2 DAYS ...CAME FROM SOMEPLACE IN ATLANTA.....IT WAS A NEW PART .....NOT REBUILT........IF YOU KNOW OF A LOCAL PLACE THAT DOES ALTERNATORS...GENERATORS...STARTERS THEY MIGHT COULD REDO IT FOR YOU..

call John Swallows in cleveland..he will fix you up....number may be listed if not any bait store would proably have it
