I am getting ready to purchace a new trolling motor and was wanting to know how to determine what length shaft I needed , and opinions on motoguide or minkota? THANXS.
H-1 there have been many discussions on this in the past. The way i measured for my troller was to measure the distance from the bow to the water line and then added some. I ended up getting a 50" one for mine. I had one that was a 45" and it kept getting out of the water when the wind got up or I hit a good wave. Even if it is too long at the time you can adjust it to be up some and not have as much shaft in the water.

I presently have a Motorguide on mine but I have owned both kinds. I guess it is just a personal preference of what you want to do or how you use it. If I was gonna be in close hitting the bottom or the bank a lot I would go with the Minkota. They are quieter and have a composite shaft. They can bend some and still flex back.

I got the Motorguide at a good price and even tho it is a little big for my boat it fit my type of fishing. It has 82# thrust and I can hold my boat in a pretty stiff current or wind and still do ok. It has a metal shaft and will flex some but be careful. I got over running it aground after a few mishaps and started using my head and pulling the motor up before I hit the rocks.

Like I said it is probably whatever you prefer or need. I would get one with more power than i would need. Just for the safety aspect of it.
