I have a 225 opti max 05 model blown four times and now has a twisted sleeve in piston mechanic says definitely mercurys fault can't get them to help me out on it I think its a lemon only has 190 hours on it anyone got any ideas on what to do send pm if so or just post what u would do really let down with this motor

Have they sent the ECU and the injectors off to be tested??? Most fuel injected engines fail due to injector issues. If the sleeve has twisted that would indicate either the engine has overheated or the tolerance between the block and the sleeve are incorrect. Has it had a sleeve replaced before??? They can distort. I have a 2.5 here that I have had to install 2 oversized sleeves because the block is distorted.

As James has said, evidently your mechanic is only replacing the parts that broke and not addressing the cause of the failure. We certainly don't have enough information regarding the history of this engine to tell you what that cause might be. All the DFI engines are very complex creatures. I would suggest you look for a known, good Optimax technician. If you don't know of one, I can recommend the folks at Bunch Marine in Harriman - http://www.bunchmarine.com/. Sorry for your problems.

The power head on there now is a new one and all injectors are new pretty much everything new the mechanic said the sleeve was to small and bunch marine would not help me out at all I wouldn buy a five cent piece of bubble gum up there after all the money I spent up there ty at nichols finally helped me and told me it was definitely mercurys fault I just don know what to do I don't even trust the motor to drive it a mile down river I think mercury should have to fix it or new motor its ridiculous how bad it is

Motor has had four power heads all new injectors new reeds and on second foot in al most five years first time it blew up had it for two months power head has never lasted a year I think motor is just a lemon oh don get me wrong liked. The mechanics at bunch just management left a bad taste in my mouth its just to much money for me to fix in these hard times and I'm just wonder what will happen next

I would go back to the mercury dealer you purchased the motor from and ask to speak with the local Mercury representative, it use to be a guy named Rod or Rob I think, don't know for sure if he is still rep. or not but the Mercury dealer will know. Tell him the motornumber and ask him to look at the past service record and explain why there has been so many problems with this motor. You may want to suggest mercury sending a new FULLY DRESSED power head that includes a newECU.

The block I have here that I have is a mercury "repower" meaning it was a Mercury rebuild. #4 sleeve actually pulled away from the block. When I got to looking at it, there was physical damage to the block where it had previously blown. Meaning that mercury just put a sleeve in there and didn't do a good job rebuilding it. Because it is a "O" ring head gasket engine and seals on the block and not the sleeve, the exhaust was going between the block and sleeve and had carbon build up and distorted. It took a .040 oversized sleeve to correct the distortion done to the block. If it was a "standard" head gasket it would have not allowed the exhaust to get between the block and sleeve because of where it seals on the sleeve and not the block. The power heads you have gotten may have been REBUILDS (poorly done) and not NEW power heads. This may explain why so much trouble. Just a thought!

Pal, you've had a nightmare for sure. I hope the dealer that has been performing all that work has documented your problems and will be able and willing to intercede with Mercury on your behalf. I believe that is your best hope for a good resolution. There is a ton of those engines in service. Mercury has a good rep for standing behind them - to the point of covering some failures beyond the warranty period. For that to happen, however, a well documented case will need to be made to Mercury by the servicing DEALER. It should also be your dealer that gets the Merc rep involved to inspect the damage. Wish you the best of luck getting some relief.

I bought the motor from bunch but can't get them to help I got all the work documented I don't understand why merc want fix this problem its bad when the mechanic says without a doubt its merc fault with the sleeve got pics to prove it i talked to the rep at the bullet rally but he didn sound interested I don want to take it to court but I think that is where its headed if any other suggestions let me know I thinks cause I'm young they think they can bully there way out of it and thanks for the suggestions

If the powerhead is "repower" it should have a sticker on it stating that. This would mean a rebuilt engine and not a new engine when they put it on. I used to work for Dodge and if the vehicle need a engine under 3/36,000 warranty, it got a 100% new engine unless it was not available. If it needed a engine under a service contract it got a rebuilt unless it wasn't available. Can be a lot of difference between the two. The one "repower" 2.5L I have was poorly put together and I was shocked at what I had found.

I also know that a lot of times a vehicle would be out of warranty and the customer would call Chrysler and complain that they had records of the same fault previously and they would get the rep involed and 99% of the time they would take care of the customer. So before I contacted my lawer, I would call the regional rep directly and see what he says he can do. Just my thoughts....
