Trout fishing

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I fished it two weeks ago.

The fish were on the small side (typical stockers ie. 8"-10") but picked up some better fish downstream from all the walk-in areas.

There was the constant midge hatch so fish were rising. I did fairly well on a #20 flash-back pheasant tail nymph and a #20 lightning bug.

They generated pretty heavy on Saturday (04/12), so watch the schedule closely!

Hope this helps.

The run just in front of the bridge below the dam is usually good for a couple decent fish. Once it warms up a hopper pattern with a dropper works well. Right now probably a small dry or even midge depending on water temps and clarity. Just watch the water levels these dump alot of water in a hurry up there. Stay safe.emoCool

Check http://tva.gov/river/lakeinfo/index.htm for Tim's Ford or call 1-800-238-2264 and enter 4 for generation schedule and when prompted enter 50 for Tim's Ford Dam to get the projected generation. They "usually" post the generation schedule by 4:00 pm the day before.

At the dam parking area (that would be near the dam holding water, not an expletive discription of the parking area) emoLaugh it takes about an hour for the water to "fall out" where it is fishable and easy to wade.

Remember, dam generation is given in local time, so for example if they generate from 5 am to 6 am it would be central time, and probably fishable at 8 eastern time.

Best of luck on Saturday!! emoThumbsup

All you will catch in the Elk is stocker sized rainbows and Browns if TWRA puts any browns in. The Elk has had some problems in recent years. If you are planning a trip I recomend the Caney Fork. It has much better access and you have a better chance at a magnum sized rainbow and especially browns! Good luck!

Churly, my experience would substantiate your post. But I have a few verifiable pictures of monster trout shocked down-river by TVA employees. I have targeted these species before with no luck but have not given up. It can be a fun river to learn to fish for trout but don't expect much other than stockers.

On a similar note, I understand the corp of engineers is planning to make some changes on that tail-water run over the next decade.

Thutch, I have seen pics of monster browns from the Elk as well! The problems they are having with that river stem from low nutrient and oxygen levels. These problems are caused by the problems they are having with the old dam. They put a "sluce" gate below the dam at center hill, it has increased minimum flows and I am seeing alot more forage ( shad and insects) than we were several years ago. Hopefully they will do something similar at Tims Ford, becasue the Elk is a neat fishery!
