As most of you know by now I am in a new boat, a 2007 Nitro, with a 115 Optimax. The boat runs great, handles great, does everything I wanted it to do except it was slow coming out of the hole. Trimming it helped of course but it still had a 8 second hole shot which felt like forever. I had posted on a previous thread about using a hydrofoil to add some lift and got various answers. One of the comments was from Dhaun about his G3 and putting a product on it called a "Turbo Lift". He said that it was easy to do, required no drilling and made a huge difference in his plane time. After messing around for a week or so with different props (I have a 4 blade on the way) I decided to order one of the Turbo Lifts and see how it worked

All I can say is WOW! It took about 10 minutes to install and is made of stainless steel, so no breaking off. It is custom made for the engine you are running so it fits down over the trim tab. No holes to drill at all. The hole shot went from being around 7 to 8 seconds to less than 3! The propoise effect is reduced by a huge amount also. Handles on dime. No chine walk at all. Best of all the top end actually came up a little bit, even with this extra 10 lbs of metal on the back! The folks at the marina were very impressed! It is pricey but I guess you get what you pay for. I've heard nightmares of other hydrofoils breaking off but I don't see how this one could. It is as stable as a rock and actually has a plate on the back for you to step onto to get into the boat should you fall out or have to get out for some reason. I have attached some pics. All I can say is this thing gets three thumbs up!.....emoThumbsup emoThumbsup emoThumbsup

He was a good source of info on this one Erik! I gotta say I was super surprised that this thing performed as well as it did. As for reports, now that the temps are going to drop some and I've got the kinks worked out on the boat I should be back out on the water. I HATE not being able to fish. I've been off the water for two weeks and have just about lost it. When I took the boat out this morning I headed to the nuke plant (we saw EricM) and my first cast in the new boat caught a bass! Good luck I guess! Anyways, reports will be coming now. If has any questions about this Turbo Lift let me know, I'll be happy to help if I can. It is just as Dhaun described, only better.

That kind of looks like the old "whaletail" I beleive they were the first to come out with a boat lift.

I think this particular type of foil was originally built for Boston Whaler. I spoke with the person that invented them today and he said he sells more to bass boat owners than any group now.

How fast is your boat with and without the turbo lift, also what size boat is it?

Doc, with shipping and taxes it ran about $175. The boat is a 17'9" with a beam of 86". Nitro says it will run about 51-53 with the right prop. Prior to installing the Turbo lift I was getting about 48 out of it at 5000 rpm which was all the way open. The marina said that it should run about 5700 rpm with a different prop and that the speed would pick up. I picked up about 3 to 4 mph on top end with the turbo lift, so it is running about 51-53. Haven't gotten the new prop yet to try out. The last one I ordered was out of balance and made the motor sound like an ice cream machine! This boat is rated for a 150 but comes standard with a 90. I choose the 115 Optimax because of the gas mileage and the silence, plus that little bit of extra kick! It's plenty fast for me.

Terry one other thing you might want to do is pop out those 3 vent plugs on your prop. This will help out tremendously.

I BELIEVE THOSE PLUGS COME WITH DIFFERENT SIZE HOLES IN THEM TO HELP YOU TUNE THE HOLESHOT MOSTLY. THE EXHAUST GASES ALLOWS THE PROP TO SLIP AND THE MOTOR TO REV UP TO HELP GET YOU OUT OF THE HOLE. yOU MAY HAVE TO TRY A COUPLE DIFFERENT SIZE HOLES BEFORE YOU GET IT RIGHT !! yOU MIGHT EVEN GET TO TAKE YOUR PLATE BACK OFF.

My prop has plastic plugs in it. Do you know if you take them out if they can be put back in if the result is not good? Just curious.

I hope it works good for you Terry but one thing to watch out for, be careful walking around that thing. I can see it slicing into a leg in a hurry.

One thing you might consider is to get some old hose and split it lengthways and make some guards for when you have your boat parked.
Just a thought.

Cheez that ain't a bad idea. I've already scrape one leg up pretty good. I just don't know if the hose would hold. Maybe some car trim?

TERRY I`M NOT SURE IF THE PLATSICS WOULD BUT I THINK THE ONES HAVE SEEN WERE BLACK RUBBER......MIGHT WANT TO CALL YOUR DEALER TO MAKE SURE... THEY SHOULD..... THEY ARE USUALLY A TUNING VARIABLE.

Thanks for the info Pat. Mine are the black rubber ones. I talked to Ben (TR20bh) the other day on the lake and he said the same thing. I'm going to take them out tomorrow and see what it does on the lake next week. Looks like the dealer would have told me that but I guess they thought I'd know.

By the way, I want to thank everyone that has help or suggested things to help. It really means a lot to me to be able to get advice for something that I am honestly clueless about. CFF folks are the best in my book.

I`ve not had prop that uses them but the Renegade I`m using requires a little plastic adapter to keep the exhaust gas flow thru the hub. I had the wrong one to begin with and there was so much gas flow thru the outside of the prop it just spun like crazy. the Merc and OMC powerbands are so different they way they build power and torque. They make several different size hole for those plugs.... it really is a pretty good system. You might want to PM Paul Nichols He can probably get you close.

Terry the rubber hose would work but you would need to take it off before you put the boat in the water and put it back on when you park it.
