My two grandsons want to go turkey hunting. Have to be next spring as we don't have a fall season open in this area of TN. I know that the morning is a good time but there is a catch. Both of the boys are into various sports that are usually on Saturday mornings during the school year. What do I need to know that is different for hunting in the afternoon? Thanks for your help. Want to do some scouting for deer and turkey this summer and fall.

a trip into woods in the evening time is a good way to roost, those gobblers for the following morning hunt. it will at least get you in the area where they are.

You can set up same as you would and call, but in my experience Toms don't always talk back later in the day. They will generally be back in the woods esp if it's started to get hot. If you get a rainy day they will go back into fields so they can hear better.

In my opinion less is more when calling Toms. You can also just hunker down and hunt them like deer, wait for one to come by.

It's a fun sport, especially when a kid can talk turkey and get a responce. They'll be hooked!

Find a roosting area where there is a lot of scratching on the ground ... Find a good covered area with brush as a natural blind. Sit down, shut-up, be very still and wait. They will sound like kids walking in the leaves sometimes and then a lone Gobbler can be on top of you before you know it.
We do have certain Fall hunts and I do believe we have a few for kids near here.

Ive taken as many birds after lunch as I have before. One of the biggest birds i killed was right before sunset. Watched this bird fly out of the same roost two mornings in a row on the second evening he came back to roost and I got him. He would not gobble on the ground.
