Just got my first phone call from Jace (SSgt Thorn) since he left 5 mos ago... they are at a FOB and many days the internet and phones are blacked out due to some pretty harrowing situations they have had to endure. It was just good to be able to sit and talk with him for dang near 45 minutes. Both of the boys got to talk to him which made them both cry and laugh for they have been worried sick and miss their big brother terribly. Jace was lamenting being over there for his 30th birthday and for it he got to go out on a mission that made him wonder if he was going to make it another year. Keep these young men and women in your thoughts and prayers. I cannot imagine living where you are in fear of your own life and those around you 24/7.
He did say though that the highlight of the trip thus far was a day when the mail guy dropped a big box on his desk from CFF's Bluebyeyou and the well wishes of the CFF family. BBY sent them a big 'ol box of little debbie treats and some drink mixes which were a big hit that went "like hot cakes!!!". He said references are still being made surrounding that day, such as "that was about two days after the little debbies came...." The lemon pies, doughnuts and other treats went really fast and they said it was the only thing they've had other than the "institutional food" courtesy of Haliburton and MRE's since being there, being there is not a PX on a FOB. Jace said if anyone wants to find a way to get some BBQ, slaw, beans and hush puppies to them for their 4th of July picnic in the sand, that would be great!!!! emoLaugh He even asked me if I could get a bullet smoker to him and a couple of cryovac bags of ribs from Sam's!!! We had a great conversation and a few good laughs. Says he's looking forward to coming home and being the first to take a gobbler at the new place in Ramer. Last year they went to Illinois and got some Coyotes upon thier return.
If any of you are interested you can look him up on My Space under "T-Horn". Look for the 30 yr old in Iraq. Jace Thorn is his name. (His father past away and I married his mother when he was 13yrs old for those of you wondering...) There are many of them over there that have no family and no one who sends them anything at all. If any of you wish to share a letter, card, joke, or even send movies, Itunes gift cards, lightbulbs, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc.... pretty much anything you and I take for granted, let me know and I'll get you Jace's address and he'll be sure to get it to the people who are in need. There are about 10 soldiers there under him that have no family that he was speaking of in particular. Mary and I sent a couple of boxes of stuff Saturday to him. You can get a certain box at the post office that you can send at any weight to a FPO box... I just get one, leave it in the truck and fill it with doritos, oreos and those littel packets of tea, fruitpunch, lemonade, etc... when it's full, it only costs $6 to mail!!!! You cannot imagine how it lifts the spirits of these young people to get something from home. Some ideas were church groups may send bibles and some letters from Sunday school classes. I've gotten about 12 neighbor kids to write letters to send. Be creative. It's a great way to support your troops!!!! God bless them all! Just wanted to let y'all know I heard from our boy and he is safe, healthy and happy. Pray for their safe return!!!!!!
