Hello,

Thanks for allowing me to be here and post my question. I have a 19.5' Hurricane deck boat. It is a late 80s model and has a matching year Johnson 110HP outboard. The sticker on the boat rates it for up to a 150HP. I have come across a used Johnson GT150 from the same era. The person selling it has upgraded to a bigger motor for his bass boat. My father and I co-own the boat and we share costs. He does not want to u/g the motor b/c he thinks we will just be drinking more fuel with not much return on more power. The deck boat is very heavy... Our top speed with the current setup is in the low 30s according to GPS. I finally talked him into a tandem axle trailer w/brakes at the beginning of the year and he/we have been very satisfied with that u/g. I have read somewhere in the forums here that some are achieving speeds in the 60s with a GT150. I doubt we will get that out of a 150 due to the weight of our boat, but I am looking for opinions, comments, suggestions, etc... on rather or not to out the cash for the GT150. It is around $1200.

I should further point out that we purchased this boat a couple of years ago and since we did not know the history of the motor's maintenance, we went completely through it and tuned it up, reset adjustments, etc. The only problem we continue to have is that it turns hard when trying to go to the right. Th previous owner informed us he changed the steering cables and he got a set that was a little too long. We figure that is what is causing our hard right steer problem.

Thanks in advance for any input!!!

RE: U/G outboard or keep what I got???

The upgrade would be noticeable on operability and performance but doubt it would come anywhere close to 60 MPH. That Johnson GT150 is a very strong motor putting out about 165 HP at the prop stock, but does like fuel depending on how it is operated.

the 150 would be a great upgrade, very big difference going from the v4 to a v6. as rivercanyonbass has stated they do like the fuel.but some things are worth payin for. 1200 seems cheap for a gt150. your steering is caused by torque from the motor might adjust your trim tab to the right and get some of it out, on that heavy of a boat might look into installing aftermarket trim tabs

Re: U/G outboard or keep what I got???

Id say do it since its a big heavy boat. Id say expect 45 ish at best. You may get similar economy or better at the other outboards speeds. Especially the 110s wot speeds you should be able to cruise at those with better economy. Its most important to set it up correctly to get the best performance. Of course always check the transom it will be a heavier motor. Dont forget you can sell the old motor for probably similar price or keep it for a backup.

I would definitely upgrade. That is a great deal on the motor. You could sell yours for the same. I went from a 70hp to a 150hp on my new boat and it is a world of difference. That same motor goes for between 2500 and 3000.
