I'm looking for some info on putting in below Nickajack dam and fishing a major creek just below the dam on the right side of the river. I was thinking of using the ramp on the South Pitttsburg side of the river. Will this be a good ramp to use and any other info would help, never been down there before. Thanks, Mitch.

The dam ramp would be a lot closer than driving all the way to South Pitt. If this creek is above Burns Island then you're talking about the Sequatchie River.

Yea, thats the creek that I'm talking about. I was talking about the ramp right below the dam. I think you get off at the same exit that you use to go to marion county park. Am I right there, I don't really know. Do you know anything about that creek and would it be good this time of year.

I've fished that creek both from a boat near where it dumps into the TN and upriver from hwy 111. I've never had much luck near the mouth, but I don't believe I have fished it this time of year. it is very shallow in places so be careful running up in there, especially if it is muddy and you can't see in front of the boat. My experience is that most of the river can be waded and the part that can't is easiest to access via a flat bottom or canoe. I'd appreciate hearing how you fare, assuming you go.

Mitch,

No, the next exit going west on 24, exit 158. Turn left off the exit onto Shellmound Rd. Drive until it dead ends at the dam. I've never fished that far down so I can't say about fishing there.

You drive past Shellmound down to the dam and turn right. The ramp is wide enough to launch 3/4 boats at one time.

If the turbins at the dam are running wide open the Seq. river should be o.k. for fishing but when the dam shuts off the water level for the first mile or two will drop as much as 2 ft and it seems to shut down the bite when it fluctuates like that. Watch out for all the trees and logjams and it doesn't take much rain to muddy it up and debris will float down it. Let us know how it goes.

You must have generation at the dam in order to have any luck fishing the river below the dam. If the generators are off, you might as well go home. The ram at the dam area is excellent, but the ramp at South Pittsburg can be short if the water level is too low. If they are generating, you should be ok for water level at South Pittsburg. I use the ramp at the dam unless I want to fish below South Pittsburg.
