This is probably all over the news down there but thought I'd throw it in from the TVA wire...

Volkswagen Selects Chattanooga for Major Assembly Plant Volkswagen Group of America has announced that it will build a United States assembly plant in Chattanooga.

Volkswagen officials made the official announcement at 11:30 a.m. today at Chattanooga's Hunter Museum.

Volkswagen says it will invest about $1 billion in a 1,350-acre site in Chattanooga's Enterprise South Industrial Park, about 12 miles from downtown. About 2,000 jobs are expected to be created, and production is scheduled to begin in early 2011.

"We're very excited that Volkswagen is locating in the Tennessee Valley and has chosen to call Chattanooga, Tennessee, home," TVA President & Chief Executive Officer Tom Kilgore says.

"TVA and our distributor customers appreciate being part of the economic-development team and recognize the extensive efforts made by all parties to recruit this high-profile industry that brings tremendous employment opportunities to our region."

With TVA's focus on energy, the environment and economic development, TVA staff participates on project teams to help identify and showcase potential sites for industries. The Enterprise South Industrial Park is one of the Valley region's several megasites that are certified as suitable for large industries.

Automotive manufacturers typically have a positive, ripple effect on economies throughout the surrounding area as suppliers and other businesses locate nearby.

Other sites Volkswagen considered included two Tennessee Valley sites.

The Chattanooga site was certified by McCallum Sweeney Consulting as part of the megasite-certification program. The program was begun in March 2004 in response to a growing need for large industrial properties appropriate for automotive-manufacturing facilities. TVA selected McCallum Sweeney of Greenville, S.C., as an independent source to evaluate megasites. McCallum Sweeney was chosen for its expertise as a site-selection consultant for the automotive industry.

TVA will continue to support and help other Valley communities market the remaining certified megasites. (For more info on economic development and megasites, see TVAed.com. )

Volkswagen recently moved its North American headquarters from Detroit to Herndon, Va., which is near Washington, D.C. The company produces VW cars and trucks. The company also makes vehicles under other brand names, including Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.
