Ok so I had the issues with the tach not working correctly and switched the pickup wire to the second regulator and had the same issue, the tach would read up to around 4000 and then drop to 0, eventually it cleared and was working ok for a few days. 2 days ago the tach completely quite working so I tried moving the screw in the back of the tach to clean the brushes in it with no luck. Switched back to original regulator and tach works again. Starting battery has not been getting charged very well and I had it load tested today, the battery is good to go. Suspect bad Voltage regulator. Went out to inspect and found one of the red wires coming off the regulator had broken at the male female connection. Reinstalled new male fitting, but found a small blackish area on the regulator, yes it smelled a little acrid. Suspect again that the regulator is the issue. What are some other indications if the regulator is going bad, also after making the repair to the broken wire I tried the Tach pickup on it again to see and had no luck. I really think the regulator is bad but would like to have a little more assurance before I spend the $75.00.
