i am looking for a rifle i can use for small game and maybe big game, i dont know what i want yet so anyone who has something of interest shoot me an im or whatever. probably no smaller than a 223 up to a 300 ultra mag. i aint wanting to spend an arm or leg but maybe around less than 700 bucks thanks joe

If you hunt in Georgia there are two choices for a single weapon for both small and big game. Either a muzzleloader or a shotgun. Illegal to hunt small game with any centerfire and illegal to hunt big game with any rimfire. Can't speak much for Tennessee. Them boys in Nashville come up with some weapon laws that defy logic.

i just moved back down here from ohio and we could use high powered rifles. we couldnt use for big game due to the flatness of the terrain but we could use them for small game. what is your suggestion cheez on a weapon of choice, im staying away from a muzzleloader aint worth my time but as far as a shot gun ill go for it

If you want something for small AND large game you might want to look into a shotgun with interchangeable barrels, or possibly a single shot that you can interchange (T/C Encore, NEF, etc...).

I've got two deer rifles on the block for sale, but neither would do for small game, a Ruger 7mm and aMarlin .444.

For squirrels any rimfire will do. My favorite is the 17 Mach II. For deer the sky is the limit. A .308 or 270 will work just fine. No need for an ultramag in the south unless you are going for extreme range shooting with light bullets.

.17 all the way for your small game!!! That is a MEAN little rascal! Fast, flat, and deadly!

Like Cheez said, Deer hunting is open to many different calbers. Most common choice of folks would be a .270 or 30-06 as a universal gun for anything we can kill east of the Mississippi. And a .308 is an excellent caliber with plenty of pop. And if you want something that has plenty of knock down power, but not a whole lot of recoil, look at a 7mm-08. Great shooting round and will kill a deer no problem, with hardly any recoil compared to a 30-06 or .308.

And don't overlook the .280...doesnt get a lot of attention, but always a great caliber for whitetails. The .280 was a popular round years and years ago, but it kind of phased out for a while. But now it is starting to make a comeback as a popular round. My Dad used to be a gunsmith way back when he was in his 20s, so I have about one of every caliber you can imagine laying around....and my 2 favorites are my Browning A-Bolt .270 and my Winchester .308, with my Remington model 70 7mm-08 following closely behind in 3rd...all with Leupold optics
