Want to see what the new Chickamauga Dam will look like??

The video is even more impressive with the addition of that maritime construction music! What impresses me the mostis the logistics of keeping the locks running while construction is underway!

Yea... this is good. Definitely fills in blanks I had questions about, although it doesn't address how they'll be handling the "lake side" of the Dam. I'm curious about that, considering the significantly greater water depths on that side?

FYI, here is the Corps of Engineers web site about project, slated for completion in 2013 (depending upon funding).

Nice find Troy! I didn't know our dam was so inadequate geez only one jumbo barge!

That's really neat! Just how long is the construction supposed to take, anyone know?

Its post to be done by 2010 depending on funding.

Does anyone know why it is designed to protrude so far out into the river side. It looks like it could be half as long and still get the locking of barges done at its larger volume.

This is a complete and total guess... however I suspect that the exceedingly long wall is to deflect cross-current created by the turbine flow.

Downstream the flow is fairly straight. However up above the railroad bridge there can be a significant cross-current from the outflow. I can see where trying to nudge barge's 3-wide into that slot, with a strong cross-current would be a challenge.

But again, that's just my guess.

The entire new lock is constructed on the downstream side. The new lock is 60 x 330 and that is the reason for the downstream length. The upstream side will not require a lot of construction and this the upper miter gates will be where the the exisitng flood gates are.
