Excerpt as follows:

Three weeks ago Jack Forbes and his wife, Mary, were doing what they do a couple of times a week: Trolling for trout on Watauga Lake. Over the years the Elizabethton couple have caught their share of trophy fish - 6- and 7-pound rainbow trout, a 15-pound lake trout - but nothing like what they hauled in recently.

The Forbes reeled in a 22-pound, 2-ounce lake trout that broke the state record by 33 ounces. The previous record was 20 pounds, 1 ounce caught by Eddy Southerland from Watauga in 1994.

"We were fishing in 105 feet of water and trolling about 60 feet deep," Jack Forbes said. "I told her if we're hung, we're hung on some type of fish."

The deep, cold water of Watauga makes it one of the few reservoirs in Tennessee that can sustain trout populations. Rainbow and lake trout, along with walleye, are stocked annually in the lake by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and rainbows and lake trout were what the Forbes were targeting.
