emoBang Tried to go wet a line sat. and when me and korngrinder put in and started the engine it just ran for a second or two and then died. I tried to restart but it sounded like the batt was dead, swapped the trolling batt and still nothing. I pulled it home and started troubleshooting. The bottom cylinder had a good bit of water in it so i pulled the head. How do I know where this is coming from and where do I go from here. I know I need a manual and have know idea where to find one. The engine is a 1976 Johnson Stinger model number 75ELR76D. Please help me guys.

THAT`S NOT A GOOD SIGN.....EXAMINE THE HEAD GASKETS AND THE SURFACES OF THE BLOCK AND HEAD FOR SOME SIGN....ALSO LOOK IN THE CYLINDERS GOOD.....THE WATER MAY HAVE RUINED THE CYLINDER.. LOOK FOR STREAKS OF SHINY METAL AND ABRASION.....HAS THE ENGINE BEEN OUT IN THE FREEZING WEATHER...THEY USUALLY SURVIVE OUTSIDE WITHOUT BUSTIN` THE BLOCK BUT I DON`T REALLY DON`T KNOW HOW...THE WATER JACKETS MUST DRAIN DOWN GOOD...IS THIS AND INLINE 3-CYLINDER ENGINE ??

Thanks for the info guys and yes it is an inline three cyl. I have kept it outside but always in the down position. It ran fine the last time I had it out and then this.....

if you were just idling along and it hadn`t been running too long you might get lucky and not have any cylinder damage...look at the gasket real close and look for a little contact line where the head/gasket and cylinders all came together...there will usually be some indication where the seal wasn`t good....and take a flashlight and look back in the jacket for a crack...it`ll probably be hard to see and may not open until the water gets to normal operating temp

If you think it might be the gasket ...it might be worth buying a new one and trying it again...they are not too expensive....you`ll need to get the right torque sequence and poundage....If you can get it to a good shop and get them to just look at it since you`ve already got the head off and maybe get a little advice...for free....they should be able to tell you if your cylinders are hurt...
good luck !!

Everything the previous reply stated is correct>

If your head gasket is not blown chances are it's not a very good sign. Whats the history on the motor?

If you need to PM on your engine problems and I 'll try to help in greater detail. Or call me at (706)891-9921.
